La Jolla Cove beach

  • La Jolla Cave Beach is a small but picturesque beach in La Jolla, near San Diego, one of the most well-known cities in California. The coastline is known for the high amount of sea animals that inhabit the place. Fur seal and sea lion nests are the destinations for many tourists, especially families. The waters here are perfect for diving.
  • Beach description

Many wild animals, like seals and barracudas, live near the Jolla Bay. The large sea bass - orange garibaldi - can be encountered here. Depending on the season, swimmers explore the sea ravines near the bay, to the south of it, where the kelp thickets are growing, or to the north of it, along the caves.

This whole area is an ecological nature reserve. Children and other visitors who aren't able to partake in underwater swimming explore the pools that show the sea life during low tides. To make exploration convenient, don't forget to bring comfortable shoes that won't slip on the muddy surface.

It's recommended to not disturb the sea lions and seals, walk and swim close to them. The children's pool has a seasonal schedule. It's prohibited to come here during the breeding period. The wild nature is prioritized, and people can only watch and photograph here. If there's a risk of harming animals, the culprit will be fined 500$.

The smell here might be unattractive to some, as it combines the feed of sea dwellers and birds nesting on the rocks with their excrements. The water isn't always suitable for swimming. But people usually come to La Jolla Cave to watch animals, not to swim.

The following is available for the visitors:

    1. A parking lot. It fills quite quickly, and those who are lucky enough are able to park their vehicle on a nearby street.
    2. Toilets, showers and changing rooms are available in the upper area of the beach.
    3. The rental store with sports equipment, chairs and umbrellas. Surfing boards, inflatable mattresses and fishing are prohibited.
    4. Rescue workers are stationed in the bay. Visitors receive information about the sea currents, water temperature, tides, stones and seaweed near the coast.
    5. A spacious green zone, where tourists walk, partake in yoga, fly kites, play and set up picnics, is located near the bay.

When is the best time to go?

To lay off on the beaches of the mainland, it is best to come in the summer, when a sufficiently warm temperature is settled for swimming. Places like Florida or the Hawaiian Islands are comfortable all year round.
