Kleftiko beach

Now, monk seals are hiding here, and before, pirates hid their ships in the rocks of Kleftiko after attacks on merchant ships. Thus, they “swept the tracks” and restored their strength. Today, you can get to the Kleftiko beach only from the sea - boats come here as part of private excursions, as well as regular ferries. The excursion program when visiting Kleftiko usually includes swimming in the Sikia cave, where the sun's rays are reflected from cobalt water, and mineral deposits create a rock rainbow.

Beach description

Kleftiko is not a beach in its classic appreciation with sand or pebbles but it is the unique coastal view where tourists enjoy swimming and scuba-diving. It is the accumulation os majestic volcanic white rocks standing right in turquoise waters, and snow white cliffs descending to the sea from the hills.

Kleftiko is popular not only for its wonderful views but also due its location in a place difficult of approach. You can get here only by water; at this, you have two options.

  • regular tours from Adamas port to Kleftiko, and from the southern part of the island, within which, several beaches of Mylos can be visited;
  • renting a yacht, with all the necessary things and equipment for scuba-divers included.

Masks and foot fins are provided to people who travel on tour boats, free of charge. Moreover, tourists are suggested to take underwater pictures taht will be provided in the electronic format when te tour is over.

Kleftiko has calm waters: waves are explained by constant movement (yachts and boats swim here daily) but they create no obstacles to comfortable swimming.

When is the best time to go?

Greece - a country with a long length from north to south, so the recommendations will vary depending on the place where you are going. The holiday season  begins in May and reaches a peak in July-August: there are too many tourists, and the temperature on the southern islands reaches 40 degrees, which may still not play a role on the beach, but certainly not suitable for sightseeing. So the best time to relax in Greece is the end of spring-beginning of summer or September-October.

Infrastructure

There are no basic amenities on the beach, as it is not accessible from land. However, all that can usually be needed on a sea voyage is on yachts and boats on which vacationers come here – a toilet, shower, places to relax, and even a kitchen. By the way, during the cruise they usually provide with freshly caught and freshly cooked seafood.

An overnight here on land is also not possible – the nearest hotels are located at a distance of 10 km. For example, Villa Notos. However, many yachts offer overnight stays.

Useful information

  1. If you go to Kleftiko from Adamas, take the time to visit the Holy Trinity Church in the city. This is one of the oldest churches on the island - its history goes back thousands of years. It impresses with its unusual architecture and rich collections of exhibits of historical value.
  2. According to legend, one of the rocks of the Meteors (that is what these white blocks are called) was a refuge for pirates. In the cave under water, they hid the loot, which has not yet been found. Some enthusiasts still do not give up hope to try their luck off the coast of Kleftiko.
  3. It is interesting that Kleftiko is not only the name of the Greek beach, but also a dish of national cuisine. In literal translation, this name means "stolen meat", however, it is still unclear how it is associated with the popular beach. But the meaning of the culinary name is worth looking for in history - during the Ottoman rule, the Greek rebels stole meat (usually whole lamb) from the enemies and buried it in a pit with diluted coals. Before they rubbed with nearby herbs. When they returned for prey a few days later, they were waiting for well-roasted tender meat.
