Papafragas beach

Located in the northern part of Milos and is one of the island's business cards. This is not a very typical beach, it is very tiny and looks more like a cave in the rocks. Several centuries ago, Papafragas was a pirate base where sea robbers hid the loot and hid from retaliation. Now it is a must see in Milos and one of the most visited by tourists destinations.

Beach description

Getting to Papafragos and descending to it are different tings People who want to get to the beach will have to walk the steep stairs cut in the rock. This descent (and, respectively, the ascent on the way back) won't be easy to everyone, so elderly people and children should not push their luck. And those who decided to visit the pearl of Milos, should not forget about food and water reserve, sun protection creams, hats, and the most importnat thing, convenient closed shoes.

There is a more pleasant way to get to Papafragas - by sea from polonia or other closest villages. It will be a bit more expensive but you won't be burdened with all beach equipment, plus ascending the rocky path with them. The only disadvantage of the second variant is the impossiblity to see the beach from above. And this view is worth it!

From above, Papafragas resembles some giant swimming pool of fantastic bright blue color, surrounded with magnificent rocks and reliably hidden from strangers' eyes. It cannot be seen from the road, and one should follow the pointers to see where the path begins. After the descent, you find yourself on a nice tiny sand beach that can give room to maximum twenty people. This should be taken into account before visiting: it's better to come in the evening or in the morning, and preferably, not in high season.

If waters are still, it will be easy to swim through the succession of stone archs, look into grottos and caves and swim in a mask as long as you wish, enjoying the beauty of underwater statues. But it should be remembered taht even small storm causes a high risk to get damaged by a sharp stone or a rock piece that cipped off, so snorkeling and diving fans should be very attentive.

The beach is non-equipped, it has no habitual facilities, even has no bathrooms. So, you should take everything you need with you, and don't forget to take garbage from the beach. A rather spacious and free parking lot for car owners is situated in the beginning of the path; in the high season, tourists leave their transport right by the roadside.

When is the best time to go?

Greece - a country with a long length from north to south, so the recommendations will vary depending on the place where you are going. The holiday season  begins in May and reaches a peak in July-August: there are too many tourists, and the temperature on the southern islands reaches 40 degrees, which may still not play a role on the beach, but certainly not suitable for sightseeing. So the best time to relax in Greece is the end of spring-beginning of summer or September-October.

One of the most attractive accommodation options in these places is the apart-hotel Avra Pahainas, located within walking distance immediately to three beaches. Papafragas is 350 meters away, and the beaches of Pros and Pachena are no more than 200. The hotel is located in a quiet and cozy place on top of a hill, which offers magnificent views of the surroundings and the best sunsets in Milos. All rooms at the hotel are decorated in a traditional Cycladic style, spacious and comfortable, some with a kitchenette. It includes satellite TV and free Wi-Fi. Useful information

A little east of Papafragas, excavations of the ancient settlement of Phylakopi, the largest settlement on the Cyclades, dating back to the Neolithic era, are being carried out. In this unique place, you can trace the centuries-old history of ancient civilizations, starting from the III century BC. Part of the territory is open to free access and is a unique open-air archaeological park. It is not difficult to get to it, a convenient dirt road leads from the highway to Phylakopi. The last part of the path will have to be overcome on foot; cars are not allowed into the excavation area.
