Pollonia beach

Located in the northern part of Milos next to the village of the same name. This, of course, is not the most secluded beach of the island and is quite lively in the high season, however this slight inconvenience is fully compensated by the magnificent view of the old town and the harbor with colorful boats. Another undoubted advantage of Pollonia is the dense thickets of tamarisk trees, framing the beach as an emerald necklace. Their combination with soft golden sand and a quiet, crystal-clear sea creates an amazing atmosphere of calm, comfort and serenity. That is why there are many families with small children who love to flounder in shallow water and sculpt funny figures from sand.

Beach description

The coastline stretches almost for half a kilometer, is covered with fine golden sand, and has a good water entry. The protected bay is almost not subject to strong winds that are typical for the north coast. In spite of the fact that the port is near, the sa is clear like a tear. The bottom is even, without sharp relief drops, underwater rocks occur from time to time, well-seen in clear water, that serve as perfect springboards for divers.

The beach is not equipped, and small sites with sling chairs and umbrellas are equipped only near taverns. The most visitors stay on their towels, and when the afternoon heat increases, move to the shadow of tamarisks. Concerning entertainment: beach volley-ball, water games and boattours.

There is a small family diving center situated on a neighboring beach, a couple of kilometres southwards from Pollonia. During the diving session, one can visit the unique underwater caves and grottos.

Newly weds and mature couples will also enjoy vacation in Polonia – the beach has numerous romantic restaurants and taverns where they can have the unforgettable evening, listen to live music, and see the picturesque sunsets.

When is the best time to go?

Greece - a country with a long length from north to south, so the recommendations will vary depending on the place where you are going. The holiday season  begins in May and reaches a peak in July-August: there are too many tourists, and the temperature on the southern islands reaches 40 degrees, which may still not play a role on the beach, but certainly not suitable for sightseeing. So the best time to relax in Greece is the end of spring-beginning of summer or September-October.

Infrastructure

Pollonia is a fairly lively village with developed infrastructure. The port, which is connected by ferry service to neighboring islands, is its heart. Around the harbor are concentrated the most popular restaurants, shops and hotels, there are also fish and vegetable markets.

One of the most attractive accommodation options is a small hotel. It is located at a relative distance from the road and the noisy center, but it’s close to the sea (several tens of meters). It offers modern air-conditioned studios with free internet and satellite TV. The spacious balconies offer panoramic views of the bay and mountains, and the bathrooms include slippers, a hairdryer and personal hygiene kits. Individual kitchenettes are equipped with modern appliances, there are all necessary utensils, a refrigerator, a coffee maker and a microwave. Free parking, a sports and children's playground, a relaxation area and a barbecue area are available on site. It is possible to book a transfer to the port of Adamantas or Milos Airport. There are shops, restaurants, and bakeries within walking distance to the center of the village - one and a half kilometers.

Useful information

The beach offers amazing views of the neighboring island of Kimolos, almost uninhabited (the population is just 800 people). Like Milos, it arose as a result of the eruption of a volcano, so mountains and rocks predominate in its landscape. You can rake a boat trip to Kimolos by ferry or sightseeing boat, travel time if no more than 20 minutes.

The history of the island, its cultural heritage, as well as the traditions and life of the local population can be found in the Ethnographic Museum (it works only in summer). Next to it there is an interesting private maritime museum.

On the island, you can admire the remains of a well-preserved ancient Byzantine fortress, which once served as a defense against pirates, swim on wild beaches in the company of rare turtles (if you are lucky), taste local wine and delicious grilled squid. Going on this fascinating journey, you need to take care of comfortable closed shoes, hats and sunscreens.
