Paleochori beach

Located on the south coast of Milos, ten kilometers from Adamantas - the main harbor of the island. This is perhaps the most picturesque and impressive beach of Milos, formed as a result of the eruption of an ancient volcano. It can be easily reached from any part of the island by a rented car, regular bus or taxi - a convenient asphalt road leads directly to the coast. But there can be problems with tight parking, especially in high season, so visitors often leave their cars right on the side of the road.

Beach description

Paliochori is conditionally divided into three zones each of which has its own admirers. The central zone is the largest and most equipped, it has paid sling chairs and umbrellas, water closets, washing rooms and changing cabins. The beach is covered with sand mixed with pebbles sparkling like gems against the sunrays. It is preferred by families with small kids, people who value comfort, and mature couples.

Along the beach, you will find several taverns, including the legendary Sirocco famous throughout Milos. The island inhabitants often come here for a lunch or a dinner, and the establishment is extremely crowded on weekends. People come here to enjoy high quality and versatility of dishes, friendly atmosphere and wonderful views opening from the vast open veranda. This tavern is also characterized by its Volcanic food (fish, meat, and vegetables wrapped in foil and baked in hot sand) that is served only here.

The left part of the beach is preferred by nudists and those who value the secluded recreation. In order to get to this secret corner, you'll have to follow the narrow rocky path among the rocks. There are no umbrellas and sling chairs here, so tourists use their towels. The beach is covered with multi-colored fine pebbles sparkling like gems against the sunrays. There are underwater boulders of volcanic origin in the sea, so special shoes should be provided. By the way, the beach sand is rather hot, especially closer to the rocks. It is connected with the increased volcanic activity inside the island that remains until now.

the right part of the beach is also hidden behind tall rocks that can be bypassed by land or sea. One can get here down the stairs from the tavern. It is the most picturesque part of Paleohori, surrounded with multi-colored rocks with various grottos and caves from all sides. There, you can enjoy an improvised sauna by digging yourself into hot sand, after which it is a pleasure to swim in the sea and to observe small bubbles of sulful springs raising from th bottom.

It goes without saying that this beach region is the perfect snorkeling place. Every year, thousand of tourists visit this place in order to observe the underwater volcano secret life, to investigate numerous caves and just to enjoy the views of beach rocks painted by fanciful nature into all colors of rainbow.

But the main peculiarity of Paleokhori are its hot sulphur springs bursting forth out of the earth and filling the neighborhood with the special scent. Due to them, the beach is a natural SPA resort where you can take hot sulfur baths and dig deep into curing volcanic sand. Due to springs, water near the coast becomes yellowish, and if you immerse your legs into the sand bottom to the ankle level, you can feel the unusual and very pleasant temperature contrast (near feet – 40-50 degrees or so, sea temperature - 20-25 C, air temperature - 30-35 C). You can also dig a pit on the beach that will in one moment turn into an improvised bath filled with healing sulfur water.

When is the best time to go?

Greece - a country with a long length from north to south, so the recommendations will vary depending on the place where you are going. The holiday season  begins in May and reaches a peak in July-August: there are too many tourists, and the temperature on the southern islands reaches 40 degrees, which may still not play a role on the beach, but certainly not suitable for sightseeing. So the best time to relax in Greece is the end of spring-beginning of summer or September-October.
