Cayo Levantado beach

Cayo Levantado is an enchanting island that boasts both a public beach open to everyone and a private, secured area belonging to the Grand Bahia Principe Cayacoa. Although the island is secluded, accessible only by water, it becomes a bustling paradise at the height of the season, leaving scarcely any room for an apple to fall! This comes as no surprise, as everyone yearns to witness a slice of paradise, serenely tucked away from the hustle and bustle of civilization.

Beach description

Welcome to Cayo Levantado Beach in the Dominican Republic, an idyllic destination for those planning a beach vacation. This island paradise is neatly divided into two recreation areas: public and private. Both offer equally enchanting experiences, with pristine conditions that beckon beachgoers.

Imagine strolling along the coast, your feet sinking into the soft, white sand that stretches across the entire beach. It's the perfect setting to walk barefoot, feeling the sand between your toes as you sip a coconut cocktail and watch the sun dip below the horizon. The water's entry is smooth and sloping, ensuring that swimmers of all ages can enjoy a relaxing dip without any obstacles.

The sea here is typically serene, with gentle waves lapping at the shore. Lifeguards are always on duty, providing peace of mind for the many families that visit. A steady sea breeze offers a refreshing respite from the midday heat and, come evening, tenderly embraces couples as they bask in the breathtaking sunsets. Rest assured, the island is sheltered from hurricane winds, ensuring calm conditions year-round.

Arriving at Cayo Levantado is an adventure in itself. Opt for a private boat, and you'll glide across Samana Bay in just 15-20 minutes. This exclusive experience, complete with a personal captain, ship, drinks, and music, is available for the entire day at $380. Alternatively, if you prefer to travel with others, a ferry journey lasts approximately 2 hours and costs a mere $7.

  • Best Time to Visit:

The best time to visit the Dominican Republic for a beach vacation is typically during the dry season, which runs from December to April. During these months, visitors can expect ideal weather conditions with plenty of sunshine and minimal rainfall.

    • December to February: These months are perfect for those looking to escape the cold winter of the north. The weather is warm but not too hot, making it ideal for sunbathing and water sports.
    • March to April: This period is also favorable, with the added benefit of fewer crowds post the peak winter travel season. It's a great time for those seeking a more tranquil beach experience.
    • Late April to November: This is the wet season, with a higher chance of rain and potential hurricanes. While you might find lower prices and fewer tourists, it's a riskier time for uninterrupted beach vacations.

Ultimately, the peak season from December to April offers the best balance of beautiful weather and ample opportunities to enjoy the Dominican Republic's stunning beaches and clear waters. Planning your trip during these months will ensure a memorable and sun-filled beach vacation.

Infrastructure

The only hotel on the island is Gran Bahia Principe Cayo Levantado. Access to its territory for vacationers from the public beach is restricted. The hotel boasts two private beaches, each spanning 130 meters, and a secluded pool.

Given the gentle waves, surfers may find little to challenge them here. However, the vacation experience can be greatly enriched by exploring the coastal underwater world through snorkeling. If you are part of a guided tour, equipment is typically included in the price. For those vacationing independently, we recommend purchasing your own mask and snorkel. Alternatively, in a pinch, you can rent gear at one of the local bars. Additionally, vacationers have the option to rent sun loungers and umbrellas.

Bars and restaurants abound on the public beach, where seafood features prominently on the menus. To the delight of Europeans, bartenders offer not only exotic tropical beverages but also familiar beers.

  3. If you are relaxing on the island - do not miss the opportunity to visit Los Haitises National Park. It is located not on the island itself, but on the Sama peninsula, from where water transport runs to Cayo Levantado.
