Playa Grande beach

Playa Grande is located in the north of the Dominican Republic on the way from Puerto Plata to the Samana Peninsula. This is a large, wide and spacious sandy beach, which is very popular among tourists. It is ranked as one of the safest and cleanest beaches of the Dominican Republic.

Beach description

Traditionally, this beach is a vacation spot for young active people who come here with entire companies for a drive and a rich beach life. Its main attractions are red sand and warm turquoise waters. Local landscapes act as fantastic scenery for photographers - the coast, bordered by lush palm forests and white cliffs, is ideal as a backdrop for vivid photos from the rest.

You don’t need special rubber shoes to move around the beach, because it has an impeccable reputation - it is considered the cleanest beach in the country. Indeed, you will not find garbage or sticks with seaweed thrown ashore by the water element, as is the case on many other beaches in the Dominican Republic.

Like most part of beaches of the Dominican Republic, Playa Grande is a shallow area off the coast, safe for swimming of all categories of vacationers without exception. There is a flat bottom that does not threaten swimmers with sharp cliffs or sharp underwater rocks.

When is it better to go?

In summer, tropical rains and typhoons – are frequent guests in the Dominican Republic. Therefore, it is better to go there in winter, from November to March, when the air warms up to a comfortable 24-30 degrees, and the weather is dried up.

On the beach you will find public toilets, showers and a large parking lot guarded by two guards. Services offer tourists hammock and parasol rentals, diving lessons and shopping at local shops where you can buy sunscreen lotion, bathing clothes and national souvenirs.

While relaxing on the territory of Playa Grande, you can not only enjoy swimming in the crystal clear water, but also go in for surfing, since high and stable waves create ideal conditions for gliding on the board. If you are just mastering this art, you have at your disposal a surf school with courses and equipment. Alternatively, you can rent a kayak.

A variety of restaurants and cafes are widely represented on the beach, where you must definitely try fresh fish or lobsters with typical Dominican side dishes or enjoy sea views from the open terrace with a pin of colada in hand.

Useful information

  1. The ideal time for surfing on this beach is the period from October to February.
  2. At the end of the 17th century, a French ship sank here and, according to legend, left countless treasures under water. Most of them were found soon found by local residents. But even today, souvenir merchants are still talking about doubloons, which, as legend has it, are still buried in the sand along the beach.
  3. It is not recommended to come here with children, because strong waves create a danger for swimming.
