Finikounda beach

Located in the southwestern part of the Peloponesse between the ancient cities of Methoni and Koroni. Kalamata, the center of Messini's prefecture, is eighteen kilometers away. The name of the beach and the fishing village in the neighborhood are not due to date palms, as it might seem at first glance, but to the ancient Phoenicians, who once organized a large transit center here.

Beach description

A fairy long organized beach, located in a cozy bay surrounded by lush vegetation. The beach is covered with sand mixed up with pebbles, and the farther from the harbor, the bigger it is. The sea is relatively shallow, but, nevertheless, still quite cold. This is due to flows, close to the beach. But the local waters are excellent for fishing, as evidenced by huge number of fishing boats in the water area and a variety of fresh seafood in the local market. Even near the beach, you can meet fish that bite quite noticeably. The are nor dangerous, but impressions are not the most pleasant.

On the beach you can use sunbeds in exchange for drinks purchased in the beach cafes and bars. There are plenty of them here, so the beach is noisy and lively. It's a little quieter on the edge, so lovers of quiet leisure prefer to sit there on their own towels.

Next to Finikounda, there are two more wonderful beaches - Ligonammos and Lutsa, where you can go windsurfing thanks to the often blowing fresh winds. They are equipped with lifeguard towers, so extreme sports enthusiasts can feel safe even under strong waves.

When is the best time to go?

Greece - a country with a long length from north to south, so the recommendations will vary depending on the place where you are going. The holiday season  begins in May and reaches a peak in July-August: there are too many tourists, and the temperature on the southern islands reaches 40 degrees, which may still not play a role on the beach, but certainly not suitable for sightseeing. So the best time to relax in Greece is the end of spring-beginning of summer or September-October.

Useful information

Resting in Finikounda, you should definitely visit the ancient cities of Metoni and Koroni, located on both sides of the village, a few kilometers from it. They preserved unique ancient fortresses, which during the reign of the Venetians were the main outposts and were of strategic importance. In the old days they were called "the eyes of the republic", since they look like twins and are built parallel to each other. Now Koroni and Metoni are connected by a modern highway that runs through Finikounda, so it is easy to get to them even by regular bus.

There are many other ancient historical monuments in the vicinity of Finikounda, so curious active tourists will have something to do in their spare time from a beach holiday.
