Simos beach

Located in the southern part of the Peloponesse on the island of Elafonisos, part of the prefecture of Laconia. The island used to be part of the mainland, but a powerful earthquake that happened centuries ago took it off the land. Despite the remoteness and not very convenient transfer, Elafonisos is one of the best resorts in Greece, and Simos is considered to be its pearl. The beach is included to the list of nature reserves of the Natura 2000 organization and is a conservation zone in the EU.

Beach description

Once in Simos, it is difficult to get away from the idea that this is not one of the Caribbean islands, so fascinating is its extraordinary beauty. The wide kilometer beachline is covered with dazzling white sand, and there are so many of it that in some places dunes even form. The sea is quiet and calm, crystal clear, greenish-emerald shade, which seems even brighter against the background of the snow-white coast.

The bay is divided into two bays by a sandy spit protruding into the sea. To the left of the makeshift "neck" is the beach of Mikro Simos, about three hundred meters long. Cedar trees approach, exuding the divine aroma of pine needles, come quite close to it. Those who arrive early may have time to take their place in its life-saving shade, and the rest will have to rent sunbeds and umbrellas. They may also not be enough for everyone, and the price here are higher than in other Greek resorts, so it is worth foreseeing this point. Paradiso tavern and Cervi Beach bar are near the beach, where you can have a snack and quench your thirst, and, if you want, the waiters will bring you drinks right to the beach. Here is one of the parking lots.

The beach to the right of the spit is called Mega Simos, or Simos Grande, it is much larger and lively. In addition to umbrellas and sun loungers, you can rent beach beds with sheds, as well as comfortably sit on your own towels.

The beach has plenty of space for active sports, there is a volleyball net, inflatable slides and trampolines.

It is worth noting that nudists like to rest on Simos, so it should be taken into account, when coming here with children.

When is the best time to go?

Greece - a country with a long length from north to south, so the recommendations will vary depending on the place where you are going. The holiday season  begins in May and reaches a peak in July-August: there are too many tourists, and the temperature on the southern islands reaches 40 degrees, which may still not play a role on the beach, but certainly not suitable for sightseeing. So the best time to relax in Greece is the end of spring-beginning of summer or September-October.
