Antisamos beach

Nestled at the base of Mount Ainos, Antisamos Beach is a breathtaking spectacle of nature. Its shimmering turquoise waters are framed by verdant hills, creating a striking contrast with the pristine white pebbles underfoot. Visitors are treated to mesmerizing views of the Ionian Sea's azure expanse, with the mythical island of Ithaca etched on the horizon. This idyllic setting served as a backdrop for the acclaimed film "Captain Corelli's Mandolin," featuring stars Penelope Cruz and Nicolas Cage. A visit to Antisamos Beach is not just a day at the beach - it's an immersion into a scene straight out of a movie.

Beach description

The expansive white pebbles of Antisamos Beach lend the waters a crystal-clear appearance - and it's not merely an illusion. The beach has been honored with the prestigious Blue Flag, and UNESCO ranks it among the finest in Europe.

Caution is advised as the depth increases sharply from the shoreline; thus, it is imperative to vigilantly supervise children. The pebbly terrain can make water entry challenging. For non-swimmers or those apprehensive about being in the water, it is recommended to bask in the sun on the shore.

The water at Antisamos Beach is exceptionally transparent and pristine. Even when standing, the sea floor is visible, and it's not uncommon to spot schools of fish gliding by. For those equipped with snorkeling gear, the underwater scenery near the shore is nothing short of spectacular - do not miss the opportunity to explore it!

Antisamos is known for its vibrant and bustling atmosphere. The beach is fully furnished with sunbeds, beach umbrellas, changing facilities, showers, and restrooms. A variety of taverns and bars dotting the shoreline offer complimentary Wi-Fi access.

Access to the beach is possible by car via the route from Sami Harbor. However, be aware that the serpentine road leading to Antisamos is quite narrow and winding; inexperienced drivers are encouraged to consider using a taxi service.

Useful information

Those who plan to visit Antisamos for the first time will find it useful to know the following:

  1. The parking near the beach, as well as the access road, is rather narrow. Getting out of the parking lot can be difficult if many cars are parked. Some tourists, therefore, do not rent cars on the island, but ATVs. Driving them on mountain roads is more convenient, more practical, and when compared with the cost of renting, it’s even cheaper.
  2. Not far from the beach, on a hilltop, stands the monastery of Agrilia, surrounded by wild spruces. It is definitely worth visiting. It offers a magnificent view of Sami Bay on Ithaca. The famous Cosmas of Aetola preached here.
  3. On the beach you can buy special rubber shoes. You feel much more comfortable in it when you walk on large pebbles.

The beauty of local sunsets cannot be described in words. It is better to see everything with your own eyes. Just make sure that the battery on your device does not go low. It will be a shame if you can’t capture the long-awaited moment.
