Beach description

The Skala Beach has a mixed surface of sand and pebbles. The descent into water is quite steep - pebbles cover the first few steps of the sea bottom, and it switches to sand after that. This mixed surface is the reason some tourists say that the water isn't quite clean.

Swimming near the shore is quite comfortable and safe, as there are no sharp stones or holes at the bottom. Jellyfish and sea urchins are also not present. But it's advised to wear slippers while walking on the beach, as the surface doesn't feel quite good to the touch. Many doctors, however, do recommend to walk barefoot on pebbles, despite the pain. This may cure flatfoot, while also being a good source of free massage for internal organs.

Since the beach is not located in a bay, high winds are often encountered here, bringing high waves as well. It's not advised to swim during storms, as the muddy waves may also bring stones with them.

Even though Skala is a resort with many tourists coming every year, the beach itself is empty. No one will disturb you, so it's a perfect place for those who prefer quietness and solitude.

When is the best time to go?

Greece - a country with a long length from north to south, so the recommendations will vary depending on the place where you are going. The holiday season  begins in May and reaches a peak in July-August: there are too many tourists, and the temperature on the southern islands reaches 40 degrees, which may still not play a role on the beach, but certainly not suitable for sightseeing. So the best time to relax in Greece is the end of spring-beginning of summer or September-October.

Useful information

It is very important for those who come to rest with pets: pets are not allowed on the beach during the summer.

In addition, it will not be superfluous to know in advance that:

  • If you don’t want to pay for an umbrella with a deck chair, you can hide from the scorching sun under the shade of trees growing right on the beach.
  • If on the day of your arrival on the beach it will be noisy and crowded, you can look for privacy between the rocks located at the end of the beach on the right (if you are facing the sea).
  • Skala is a great place for those who like an active and varied vacation with many cozy cafes and noisy bars. Young people like to relax here. And another plus is the ability to abandon transport. If you want to relax in a rather lively resort, but walk to the beach on foot, Skala will suit you as well as possible.
  • Nevertheless, if you decide to take a ride (although it’s only 200 meters from some hotels to the beach), you can use the public transport services (there is a bus) and a taxi.

Indigenous people managed to maintain the best traditions of winemaking, so you should definitely try wine from local vineyards.
