Platia Ammos beach

Spanning an impressive 700 meters, the expansive "wild" beach of Platia Ammos is nestled on the west coast of Kefalonia and is justifiably celebrated as one of the island's finest. Encircled by towering, impregnable cliffs, the sea here is profoundly deep, astonishingly clear, and frequently animated by lively waves. The shore is carpeted with fine white pebbles, while the water dazzles with its divine shades of blue.

Beach description

Access to Platia Ammos beach is exclusively by car, as no public transport services the area. Prior to the 2014 earthquake, the journey from the road to the shore was more challenging, requiring visitors to descend 400 steep steps. The ascent was equally demanding. The earthquake caused the staircase to partially collapse, making boat travel the preferred method of arrival. Despite these difficulties, the stunning natural landscapes and the serene tranquility of the location more than compensate for any inconvenience.

The water's clarity is remarkable, allowing visibility of the sea floor even at depths of 20 meters. This clarity makes the beach a favorite among divers, while other visitors delight in the opportunity to explore the vibrant underwater world. However, it is important to note that the sea here is known for its strong currents, which may not be suitable for families with children.

Platia Ammos is not outfitted with typical beach amenities. Visitors should plan to bring their own umbrellas and deck chairs. An alternative is to arrive after noon, when the sun retreats behind the mountains, providing natural shade. It is also essential to bring your own food, beverages, and other necessities, as there are no cafes or shops in the vicinity. Additionally, be prepared for the absence of mobile phone reception in this secluded spot.

When is the best time to visit?

The best time to visit Kefalonia for a beach vacation is during the summer months, when the island's natural beauty can be fully appreciated under the warm Greek sun. Here are a few reasons why:

  • Weather: June to September offers the most reliable weather, with temperatures ranging from 25°C to 30°C, perfect for sunbathing and swimming.
  • Water Temperature: The sea is warmest in July and August, making it ideal for water activities.
  • Crowds: If you prefer a quieter experience, consider visiting in June or September, when there are fewer tourists.
  • Local Festivals: Summer is also the time for cultural events and festivals, adding a unique flavor to your beach vacation.

Regardless of the exact month, summer in Kefalonia is a time of vibrant blue skies and crystal-clear waters, perfect for an unforgettable beach holiday.
