Myrtos beach

Myrtos stands rightfully at the pinnacle of European beach rankings. First and foremost, it nestles in an ecologically pristine area, where nature remains unspoiled to this day, with not a single industrial facility in sight. Moreover, its breathtaking landscapes beckon you to grasp a brush and unleash your creative impulses. The sequence of snow-white cliffs, merging with the pure white shore and the enigmatic waters of the Ionian Sea, which shimmer with changing hues, will undoubtedly captivate your senses.

Beach description

The main feature of this beach is the white pebbly surface. However, the pebbles are interspersed with white grainy sand, which may cause your feet to sink slightly as you walk. If you stay here for a week, you'll strengthen your calf muscles, and your feet will receive a dose of free natural massage. For those who prefer passive leisure, lying on such a surface is comfortable. Considering that Myrtos is a wild beach without deck chairs, this soft surface is just right.

However, not everyone will be able to enjoy swimming here. Elderly visitors and young children, for example, may find it difficult to descend to the water. The sea bottom is covered with large pebbles the size of an egg, making the descent potentially uncomfortable. The same goes for returning to the shore - many people climb back out of the water on all fours. Additionally, there is a sudden depth spike right as you enter the water, which makes Myrtos probably not the best option if you plan to bring children with you. Nevertheless, if you wish to enjoy the breeze, set up a picnic on the shore, or take some beautiful photographs of the island's unique nature - then why not? You can bring anyone to this kind of vacation, and the steep sea bottom won't be an issue.

Despite these challenges, the beach is popular among young and middle-aged tourists craving active leisure. It's often quite windy here, which is not ideal for swimming. But if you enjoy windsurfing or kiting, then it's perfect for you.

But please note that Myrtos does not have rental stores, so you'll need to arrange everything necessary beforehand.

You can reach Myrtos from the nearby village of Assos, but you'll have to drive through the majority of the island. This journey will take about 40 minutes. As the beach is wild, no buses or other forms of public transport come here. You'll have to either call a taxi or rent a car. Until 2015, it only took 5 minutes to get from Assos to Myrtos, but after the earthquake, parts of the road collapsed onto the beach itself. It is currently closed, and you'll have to take a detour.

You can drive right to the beach, which is very convenient. Given that the beach lacks amenities such as umbrellas, sunbeds, and natural shade from plants, and there are no bars or cafes, you'll need to bring plenty of food and equipment. Having parking lots close by is a significant advantage in such cases. You won't feel burdened like a camel.

When is the best time to go?

The best time to visit Kefalonia for a beach vacation is during the summer months, when the island's natural beauty can be fully appreciated under the warm Greek sun. Here are a few reasons why:

  • Weather: June to September offers the most reliable weather, with temperatures ranging from 25°C to 30°C, perfect for sunbathing and swimming.
  • Water Temperature: The sea is warmest in July and August, making it ideal for water activities.
  • Crowds: If you prefer a quieter experience, consider visiting in June or September, when there are fewer tourists.
  • Local Festivals: Summer is also the time for cultural events and festivals, adding a unique flavor to your beach vacation.

Regardless of the exact month, summer in Kefalonia is a time of vibrant blue skies and crystal-clear waters, perfect for an unforgettable beach holiday.

Infrastructure

Myrtos Beach is nestled in a quaint small bay, flanked by towering cliffs. This pristine beach area, far removed from settlements, offers a serene escape. The nearest villages are Assos and Divarata, where most hotels and guesthouses are primarily located. However, the beach is also home to accommodations such as Myrtos Hotel and Myrtos Cottages Kefalonia, both within walking distance to the beach.

While the area lacks permanent structures for dining, occasional on-site snack bars may appear on the beach, offering essentials like sandwiches and water. However, their presence is not guaranteed, so it is wise to bring your own refreshments. These temporary establishments may also offer deck chairs and umbrellas for rent, provided you make a purchase.

Despite its ideal conditions for surfing, Myrtos Beach does not offer rentals for water sports equipment or attire.

Useful information

Numerous reviews from tourists who visited this beach helped us to combine all the useful information into the following recommendations:

  1. When you go down a winding road from the village of Divarata, linger on the observation decks. They offer stunning views that will be a great backdrop for a selfie or panoramic shooting.
  2. For the purest azure blue waves and unique white pebbles, Mirtos was awarded the blue flag, so it is protected by UNESCO.
  3. On the left, facing the water, at the far end of the beach is a beautiful grotto. Go to see it is only for experienced swimmers.
  4. Those who swim poorly should not go into the water even off the coast of Myrtos. The depth starts after 2 meters, and the waves, when trying to get out of the water, can pull back.
  5. Since the beach is not crowded, you can easily meet nudists on it. Get ready and don’t be embarrassed.

The coast of Myrtos offers stunning views of the sea sunsets. It is an ideal place for a romantic evening. If you go there with your loved ones, grab two glasses and a bottle of strong Greek wine.
