Agios Ioannis beach

Agios Ioannis is a long and extensive sand and pebble beach on the northern outskirts of Lefkada, which is located closest to the capital, just a few kilometers from it. Unusual landscapes attract lovers of beach photo shoots, and wonderful wind-wave conditions give this coast the glory of one of the island’s best kite spots, attracting many kiters and windsurfers.

Beach description

The total length of Agios Ioannis is about 3 km. For its very clear beachline and deep waters of unusual turquoise shade, which are no less impressively clean, this beach was awarded the Blue Flag. The shore is covered with light sand mixed with predominant fine pebbles. Its only disadvantage is the lack of natural shade, so it is unlikely to save on umbrellas renting.

Conceding to Vasiliki, this is the island's second largest beach in terms of wind conditions, ideal for kitesurfers and windsurfers to conquer the waves. It is especially attractive for those who can confidently experiment and improve their skills. Ideal for such water sports, Agios Ioannis has the following conditions:

  • wind steadily blowing from April to September, forming significant waves;
  • a gentle breeze in the morning, allowing even newcomers to practice here;
  • wind growth towards midday to 19 knots, making the beach suitable for experienced kiters as well.

The main beach kiting zone - in the area of ancient windmils, which functioned until the beginning of the 20th century. This area is often called Mili, which means "mills". This is where the most stable winds blow, allowing kitesurfers to hone their skills in conquering the waves under the dome of the kite to perfection. Windsurfers usually occupy the left edge of the beach where less strong winds blow.

The windmils near the coast have long been a kind of business card of Agios Ioannis. Originally, they were 12 of them, but only 4 have survived. Their presence gives the beach a romantic atmosphere. Therefore, couples also come here for romantic walks and photo shoots against the background of authentic surroundings. During the season, this part of the beach is the busiest, with a paid zone with sunbeds and umbrellas.

When is the best time to go?

Greece - a country with a long length from north to south, so the recommendations will vary depending on the place where you are going. The holiday season  begins in May and reaches a peak in July-August: there are too many tourists, and the temperature on the southern islands reaches 40 degrees, which may still not play a role on the beach, but certainly not suitable for sightseeing. So the best time to relax in Greece is the end of spring-beginning of summer or September-October.
