Vassiliki beach

Located on the south coast of Lefkada and is the highlight of the resort of Vassiliki, which is a real mecca for lovers of windsurfing and sailing. The wide sheltered bay is famous for its midday wind called Eric, which blows at a speed of 30-40 miles per hour with relatively little disturbance. Thanks to such ideal natural conditions, Vassiliki is among the ten best beaches in the world for windsurfing, and a small fishing village has become the second largest resort in Lefkada.

Beach description

An almost two-kilometer beach covered with fine pebbles stretches from the port on the east side of the bay to the village of Ponti on the west side. There is practically no wind in the morning, and the sea resembles transparent glass. This is the best time for vacation with children who can play freely in the calm, warm water without fear of inexperienced sportsmen.

In the afternoon, the sun warms up the slope of the mountain and begins to blow a powerful wind, which sometimes can be tamed only by experienced sportsmen. Therefore, the instructors hold classes with newcomers in the morning, when the wind is not too strong.

There are several windsurfing schools of different levels on the beach, as well as the Grand Nefeli Club, well-known even outside of Greece. You can rent the necessary sports equipment and rent water bikes, canoes and sapphire boards.

The beach is equipped with toilets, locker rooms and showers, and umbrellas and sun loungers are offered for a fee. There are a variety of taverns and restaurants along the beachline where you can satisfy your hunger and freshen up with drinks.

Another undoubted advantage of the local places is their easy accessability. The village is easy reached by car or bus from anywhere on the island, and the port is connected by regular ferry service to Kefalonia and Ithaca. In the high season (July-August) the influx of tourists is so great that it is necessary to book a place on the ferry for a few days. Strong storms can also adjust the sea schedule, during which sea traffic can be canceled.

It is worth noting that depending on the season, the resort has a completely different audience. From May to June and early autumn, you can see mostly mature couples who prefer a quiet and relaxing vacation, and in July-August, the village is filled with windsurfers and young families with children who turn it into a lively and noisy hangout.

When is the best time to go?

Greece - a country with a long length from north to south, so the recommendations will vary depending on the place where you are going. The holiday season  begins in May and reaches a peak in July-August: there are too many tourists, and the temperature on the southern islands reaches 40 degrees, which may still not play a role on the beach, but certainly not suitable for sightseeing. So the best time to relax in Greece is the end of spring-beginning of summer or September-October.

Infrastructure

Parallel to the beach is an asphalt road connecting Ponti and Vassiliki. Despite the proximity of these resort villages, the rhythm of life there is completely different. Ponti is much quieter and calmer than Vassiliki. From the entertainment there are only a few taverns and restaurants. Vacationers like to come here in order to taste the local cuisine, which is prepared, as a rule, by the owners of the establishments, without noise and fuss. They value their reputation very much and try to attract visitors with a warm welcome and quality of food. Therefore, Ponty is the ideal place to spend time on the open veranda overlooking the bay, watching the colorful sails of windsurfers flying along the waves.

In the vicinity of the beach there is a huge selection of accommodation from modern luxury hotels and luxury villas to budget campsites and hostels. One of the most attractive options in the category “price-quality-location” is the apartment hotel Maistrali, which is located on the first line twenty meters from the beach. It offers modern studios with luxurious panoramic balconies and comfortable kitchenettes equipped with everything you need. There is satellite TV and free internet. Vacationers can use the private parking on site. Within walking distance there are shops, restaurants and taverns. Noisy night clubs are a little off to the side and do not create discomfort during a night's rest. Hotel guests especially note the friendly and attentive attitude of the hostess Maistrali and her family, who try to please their guests not only with impeccable service but also with nice amenities in the form of homemade cakes or bunches of fresh-cut flowers.

Useful information

The port of Vassiliki is the heart of the resort and its main attraction. Built in the Venetian style several centuries ago, it has retained its former charm thanks to the old buildings, which now house numerous bars, restaurants and shops. It is an important artery that connects Lefkada with Kefalonia and Ithaca, as well as with other islands located nearby. Sea taxis regularly run from the port to the beaches of Agiofili, Porto Katsiki and Egremni, which are considered one of the best in the Mediterranean basin. Here you can also book sightseeing tours to the southernmost point of the island, where the famous lighthouse of Lefkatas and the legendary rock of Sappho are located, from which, according to legend, the poetess threw herself into the sea because of unrequited love.
