Alykes beach

Alykes - the best beach in Zakynthos for water activities

Alykes, renowned as one of Zakynthos's premier beaches for water sports, is a haven particularly cherished by surfers. The name 'Alykes,' which the beach inherited from the nearby settlement, translates to "salt marsh," a nod to the historic salt mines in the area. These mines have established the region as the island's primary hub for salt production, adding a unique historical flavor to its natural beauty.

Beach description

Alykes Beach, located near the village of the same name in the northeast of Zakynthos, is approximately 17 km from the island's capital. This beach boasts a long stretch of pristine golden sand, complemented by well-developed infrastructure, which draws numerous visitors. However, it can become quite crowded during the high season.

The gentle slope into the water and the shallow depths near the shore make Alykes Beach one of the safest options for families with children on Zakynthos. Consequently, it is exceedingly popular among families. Additionally, the neighboring beach, Alykanas, is easily accessible from Alykes, as there are no clear demarcations between them.

Alykes is often graced with a refreshing breeze, making it a cooler retreat compared to other spots on the island. This characteristic makes it an attractive destination for swimming aficionados and those who enjoy wind-dependent water sports. The mild winds and gentle waves also provide an ideal environment for novice surfers to hone their skills.

When is the best time to go?

The best time to visit Zakynthos for a beach vacation is typically during the late spring to early autumn months, when the weather is warm and sunny.

  • Late Spring (May to June): This is an ideal time for those looking to enjoy the island's natural beauty without the peak season crowds. The weather is pleasantly warm, and the sea has started to heat up, making it comfortable for swimming.
  • Summer (July to August): These are the hottest months, perfect for beachgoers who want to bask in the sun and enjoy the vibrant nightlife. However, this is also the peak tourist season, so expect crowded beaches and higher prices.
  • Early Autumn (September to October): The temperatures remain warm, but the crowds have thinned out, making it a great time for a more relaxed vacation. The sea is still warm enough for swimming, and the accommodation prices are more reasonable.

Regardless of the time you choose, Zakynthos offers stunning beaches, crystal clear waters, and picturesque views. However, for the optimal balance of good weather and fewer crowds, late spring and early autumn are the most recommended periods for a beach vacation on this beautiful Greek island.

This is one of the most interesting beaches of the island in terms of exploring the attractions located next to it. You can visit:

  • the ancient monastery of John the Baptist, erected in the 16th century;
  • the traditional Greek village of Katastari, where there are many excellent viewing points;
  • the village of Pigadakia;
  • Ethnographic Museum of Verzaggio;
  • Church of St. Panteleimon dating from the 17th century.

The village of Alikes is interesting archaeologically. Here, during excavations, ancient Mycenaean ships were found, which allowed historians to assume that it was in this place in ancient times that Arcadia was.

There is always the opportunity to book fascinating sea excursions around the island, including a visit to Navagio, Cape Skinari and the Blue Caves (closest to it), as well as other Zakynthos beaches and colorful coastal villages where local residents maintain a traditional way of life. From here it is relatively close to get to the beach Ksigiya by car.
