Alykes beach

Alykes - the best beach in Zakynthos for water activities

Alykes is one of the best beaches of Zakynthos for water sports, which is especially loved by surfers. The name of the settlement, which passed to the beach coast, is translated as "salt marsh". This is due to the location in its vicinity of salt mines, due to which this area is considered the main center for salt production on the island.

Beach description

The Alykes Beach is located near the village of the same name in the northeast of the island, about 17 km away from its capital. It consists of a long stretch of clean golden sand which, along with well-developed infrastructure, attracts many visitors. It's very crowded during the high season.

A smooth descent into water along with small depths near the shore make this beach one of the safest ones to come with children to on Zakynthos. That's why this place is very popular among family couples. You can easily reach the next beach - Alykanas - from here as there are no distinct borders between them.

Breeze is frequent here which is why it's not as hot a place as some other on the island. This feature of Alykes attracts many swimming enthusiasts and those who like water sports that require wind. Since the winds and the waves aren't high here, it's a great place for novice surfers to better their skills.

When is the best time to go?

The best time to visit Zakynthos for a beach vacation is typically during the late spring to early autumn months, when the weather is warm and sunny.

  • Late Spring (May to June): This is an ideal time for those looking to enjoy the island's natural beauty without the peak season crowds. The weather is pleasantly warm, and the sea has started to heat up, making it comfortable for swimming.
  • Summer (July to August): These are the hottest months, perfect for beachgoers who want to bask in the sun and enjoy the vibrant nightlife. However, this is also the peak tourist season, so expect crowded beaches and higher prices.
  • Early Autumn (September to October): The temperatures remain warm, but the crowds have thinned out, making it a great time for a more relaxed vacation. The sea is still warm enough for swimming, and the accommodation prices are more reasonable.

Regardless of the time you choose, Zakynthos offers stunning beaches, crystal clear waters, and picturesque views. However, for the optimal balance of good weather and fewer crowds, late spring and early autumn are the most recommended periods for a beach vacation on this beautiful Greek island.

This is one of the most interesting beaches of the island in terms of exploring the attractions located next to it. You can visit:

  • the ancient monastery of John the Baptist, erected in the 16th century;
  • the traditional Greek village of Katastari, where there are many excellent viewing points;
  • the village of Pigadakia;
  • Ethnographic Museum of Verzaggio;
  • Church of St. Panteleimon dating from the 17th century.

The village of Alikes is interesting archaeologically. Here, during excavations, ancient Mycenaean ships were found, which allowed historians to assume that it was in this place in ancient times that Arcadia was.

There is always the opportunity to book fascinating sea excursions around the island, including a visit to Navagio, Cape Skinari and the Blue Caves (closest to it), as well as other Zakynthos beaches and colorful coastal villages where local residents maintain a traditional way of life. From here it is relatively close to get to the beach Ksigiya by car.
