Porto Roma beach

Porto Roma is a small but very picturesque beach in the Vasilikos area, which is an ideal place in Zakynthos for a relaxing holiday with a certain amount of privacy. This paradise got its name in honor of the famous politician of Greece - Alexander Roma, who lived in its vicinity.

Beach description

The Porto Roma Beach is located 16 km to the southeast away from the capital, surrounded by pines and olive groves that make up natural shadows. This natural feature makes it easy to hide from the heat of the sun. It also makes for a good walk along the trees that you can partake in after swimming and sunbathing.

The beach is only a few meters long. The shoreline is clean and almost untouched, covered in sand and pebbles. The shore is mostly sandy, with pebbles appearing near the water. The beach is about 3 to 5 meters wide, with sunbeds placed in three rows.

Both casual swimmers and snorkeling enthusiasts will like the calm and clear waters. High waves are a rarity as the beach is located in the bay that protects from winds. But take note - the waters aren't very warm, in fact colder than in the other parts of the island.

This quiet picturesque beach is perfect for romantic or family vacations. You can come here with young children as the waves are rare and the descent is smooth and not deep. It's rarely crowded as well which makes for a good solitary relaxation.

When is the best time to go?

Greece - a country with a long length from north to south, so the recommendations will vary depending on the place where you are going. The holiday season  begins in May and reaches a peak in July-August: there are too many tourists, and the temperature on the southern islands reaches 40 degrees, which may still not play a role on the beach, but certainly not suitable for sightseeing. So the best time to relax in Greece is the end of spring-beginning of summer or September-October.

Infrastructure

A small fishermans port borders the beach. That is why renting catamarans and boats for sea tours is very popular in Porto Roma.

The rent of sling chairs and umbrellas is available on the beach but there are no shower stalls or changing cabins. Water closets can be found only in beach cafes. There are many public catering points on the beach. One can find both beach bars and traditional taverns offering the best local dishes with an accent on fish menu. One of the best places to enjoy nice dinner at a low price is a tavern with the same name as the beach.

The village is very pleasant due to the atmosphere of silence and privacy. There are no discos here. The closest "civilization" cluster is situated in Agios Nikolaos.

You can stay either in the village by the beach, or at the neighboring popular resort if you want to combine calm beach recreation with various entertainments. There are several mini hotels nearby. In the close vicinity to the beach (approximately in 200-300 meters), there are situated the following hotels: Porto Roma Studios and Andriani-Michalis Studios.
