Laganas beach

Laganas, a vast and immensely popular beach, along with its namesake resort, stands as one of the finest in Zakynthos. It is equally renowned for its unique wildlife, including clusters of Caretta Caretta sea turtles and sightings of the Mediterranean monk seal. This rare blend of pristine nature and advanced infrastructure renders this spot on the island particularly appealing to holidaymakers.

Beach description

Welcome to the breathtaking Laganas Beach, nestled in the southern part of Zakynthos island, a mere 9 km from the bustling capital. This expansive 9 km stretch of coastline stands as one of the longest in the Mediterranean. Despite its size, Laganas Beach is a popular destination year-round, drawing visitors to its lively atmosphere regardless of the season.

  • The shore boasts grainy, soft sand that feels luxurious underfoot.
  • In the central area, the beach offers a gentle slope, pristine sand, and warm waters, creating an ideal setting for family outings - though it may be less suitable for families with very young children due to the depth of the water.
  • As you explore beyond the central zone, the terrain shifts to a rockier landscape, with sea urchins becoming a more common sight.
  • For those seeking tranquility, the beach's more remote sections provide a peaceful retreat from the vibrant crowds.
  • At night, the beach transforms as it becomes a sanctuary for awakening turtles, leading to its closure during these hours for their protection.

The beach's perimeter is graced by the charming forested islet of Cameo, not far from the neighboring Agios Sostis beach. Connected by a quaint footbridge, Cameo is a protected nature reserve, and a nominal fee grants you access to its serene beauty. This secluded spot is especially favored by couples celebrating their nuptials.

When is the best time to visit?

The best time to visit Zakynthos for a beach vacation is typically during the late spring to early autumn months, when the weather is warm and sunny.

  • Late Spring (May to June): This is an ideal time for those looking to enjoy the island's natural beauty without the peak season crowds. The weather is pleasantly warm, and the sea has started to heat up, making it comfortable for swimming.
  • Summer (July to August): These are the hottest months, perfect for beachgoers who want to bask in the sun and enjoy the vibrant nightlife. However, this is also the peak tourist season, so expect crowded beaches and higher prices.
  • Early Autumn (September to October): The temperatures remain warm, but the crowds have thinned out, making it a great time for a more relaxed vacation. The sea is still warm enough for swimming, and the accommodation prices are more reasonable.

Regardless of the time you choose, Zakynthos offers stunning beaches, crystal clear waters, and picturesque views. However, for the optimal balance of good weather and fewer crowds, late spring and early autumn are the most recommended periods for a beach vacation on this beautiful Greek island.

Infrastructure

The resort, nestled in a natural bay, boasts a highly developed infrastructure. Guests can rent deck chairs and umbrellas on the beach, and diving opportunities are also available. However, to preserve the unique ecosystem and the rare species that inhabit it, water sports entertainment is not permitted on the beach.

Adjacent to the beach, numerous taverns and cafes transform into lively party spots as evening approaches. The village itself is home to a variety of stores catering to all preferences. Besides being the capital of the island, Laganas is a premier shopping destination in Zakynthos for those who love to shop. With its array of popular nightclubs and youth pubs, the resort is particularly favored by young adults.

While the beach may be frequented by persistent souvenir vendors, it also serves as the departure point for tours that offer a glimpse of the sea turtles.

Laganas resort is immensely popular, featuring approximately one hundred hotels, ensuring that guests will easily find suitable accommodation.

  • Most hotels are ensconced within idyllic gardens and vineyards, creating a serene oasis ideal for relaxation. Consequently, the area is sought after by family couples and newlyweds.
  • Those who revel in parties and the bustling nightlife of clubs should consider staying in the town center. In contrast, family couples may prefer accommodations on the outskirts or near the village for a tranquil atmosphere and privacy.
  • Among the top hotels is the Mediterranean Beach Resort. For a more budget-friendly option, consider Helen & Theo Studios.
  • The area also features a well-equipped camping site, perfect for those seeking the most economical seaside accommodation.
