Gerakas beach

Gerakas Beach, renowned as one of Zakynthos's cherished "turtle" beaches, serves as a crucial nesting ground for a rare species of turtle. Consequently, the area is under strict protection to preserve its natural beauty and wildlife. This makes it an ideal destination for true nature enthusiasts seeking to retreat from bustling crowds and savor a moment of tranquility in one of the island's most scenic enclaves.

Beach description

The long and wide Gerakas Beach, located near Cape Geraki on the Vasilikos peninsula in the very south of Zakynthos, is revered as a sanctuary. Loggerhead sea turtles choose these waters for their reproduction.

As this is an annual event, visitors must act responsibly to avoid disturbing the environment and its animal inhabitants. Here, the main "tourist" is the turtle, not the humans. Nevertheless, Gerakas remains one of the premier destinations for a tranquil vacation on Zakynthos.

Here are some of its unique features:

  • Gerakas is one of the few completely sandy beaches on the island, with both the beach and the sea bottom covered in fine golden sand, making it ideal for families.
  • The water depth near the shore is not extreme; the descent into the sea is gentle, and the emerald-colored waters are invitingly warm.
  • Surrounding mountains contribute to a sense of seclusion and provide protection from high waves.
  • Despite its popularity, the beach is well-maintained and clean. Seaweed may occasionally wash ashore following storms.
  • The southern part of the beach, with its rocky sea bottom, is more untamed and is a favored spot for nudists.
  • There are no water attractions, and during the turtle nesting season, watchmen are on duty to ensure their protection.

The charming Peluso Island is visible from the shore, adding to the picturesque scenery.

When is the best time to visit?

The best time to visit Zakynthos for a beach vacation is typically during the late spring to early autumn months, when the weather is warm and sunny.

  • Late Spring (May to June): This is an ideal time for those looking to enjoy the island's natural beauty without the peak season crowds. The weather is pleasantly warm, and the sea has started to heat up, making it comfortable for swimming.
  • Summer (July to August): These are the hottest months, perfect for beachgoers who want to bask in the sun and enjoy the vibrant nightlife. However, this is also the peak tourist season, so expect crowded beaches and higher prices.
  • Early Autumn (September to October): The temperatures remain warm, but the crowds have thinned out, making it a great time for a more relaxed vacation. The sea is still warm enough for swimming, and the accommodation prices are more reasonable.

Regardless of the time you choose, Zakynthos offers stunning beaches, crystal clear waters, and picturesque views. However, for the optimal balance of good weather and fewer crowds, late spring and early autumn are the most recommended periods for a beach vacation on this beautiful Greek island.
