Xygia beach

Xygia Beach is one of the most unique shores of Zakynthos, often hailed as a natural open-air spa by many vacationers. Its alternative name, Xygia Sulfur Beach, stems from the presence of sulfur springs that burst forth directly from the coastal cliffs. These springs bestow a distinctive allure upon this stretch of the island, cementing its reputation as one of the most unforgettable spots in Zakynthos.

Beach description

Welcome to the serene Xygia Beach, nestled on the northeastern shore of Zakynthos, merely 23 km from the bustling capital. This quaint, pebbly haven boasts pristine white sands, cradled by the majestic embrace of towering mountains. Unlike other sun-kissed spots on the island, Xygia offers a unique charm with its cooler waters, courtesy of the mountain's shade.

However, the allure of Xygia Beach extends beyond its tranquil landscape. Visitors flock here not just for a swim but to plunge into the extraordinary sulfur springs. Despite the pungent aroma of hydrogen sulfide, these springs are famed for their therapeutic properties.

Xygia holds the distinction of being the sole location on Zakynthos graced by these mineral-rich waters. Local lore touts the springs' curative powers, and indeed, there is evidence to support this. The sulfur and mineral-infused waters cascading from the rocks offer a natural remedy for skin ailments, drawing in a crowd eager for rejuvenation, particularly among women.

These natural springs are also reputed to combat cellulite and bolster joint health. However, it is wise to seek medical advice before indulging in these healing baths. Local wisdom cautions against exceeding a 20-minute immersion in these potent waters.

Optimal Timing for Your Visit

The best time to visit Zakynthos for a beach vacation is typically during the late spring to early autumn months, when the weather is warm and sunny.

  • Late Spring (May to June): This is an ideal time for those looking to enjoy the island's natural beauty without the peak season crowds. The weather is pleasantly warm, and the sea has started to heat up, making it comfortable for swimming.
  • Summer (July to August): These are the hottest months, perfect for beachgoers who want to bask in the sun and enjoy the vibrant nightlife. However, this is also the peak tourist season, so expect crowded beaches and higher prices.
  • Early Autumn (September to October): The temperatures remain warm, but the crowds have thinned out, making it a great time for a more relaxed vacation. The sea is still warm enough for swimming, and the accommodation prices are more reasonable.

Regardless of the time you choose, Zakynthos offers stunning beaches, crystal clear waters, and picturesque views. However, for the optimal balance of good weather and fewer crowds, late spring and early autumn are the most recommended periods for a beach vacation on this beautiful Greek island.

Infrastructure

Xigia belongs to the "wild" beaches of the island, with infrastructure that is almost undeveloped. People come here for privacy in the open air and to bathe in the famous sulfur springs.

The closest mini-hotel to the beach is Xigia Beach Residence. Those wishing to visit this secluded spot can stay:

  • Directly in the capital, and from there, arrange a tour to the sulfur springs;
  • In the hotels of Alikes, approximately 4-5 kilometers away from Xigia;
  • In Agios Nikolaos, about 3-4 kilometers from the beach, where there is a wide range of residences for rent at various price points.

Given the high demand for vacations in this area, minimal services are offered to visitors. Some umbrellas and deck chairs can be rented during the high season. A small café selling drinks is perched on the rocks above the beach. As there are no taverns directly on the beach, remember to bring your own water and food if you plan to spend the day here.
