Brighton Beach

It is situated in the southern part of Brooklyn between Manhattan Beach and Coney Island and was originally intended to be a luxury resort for rich Europeans. The Great Depression and World War II turned Brighton Beach into one of the poorest city districts. Immigrants of the USSR used this and started buying up cheap houses left and right here. By the early 90ies, Brighton Beach has fully formed its contemporary appearance that has remained unchanged for the last thirty years. It is called "Little Odessa" for a reason" Russian speech is heard everywhere, Russian products are sold in stores and at markets, and in any restaurant, you can down a shot of cold vodka and nibble on nourishing borsch.

Beach description

The beach is a wide (around100 meters) sandspit washed by turquoise waters of the Atlantic Ocean. Depth increases gradually, which is very convenient for elderly people and families with small kids. Brighton Beach is situated in a bay, so strong storms and artful oceanic currents are very rare here. Water is rather cool in early summer, its maximal temperature in August and September is 26-28 degrees.

The beach is rather crowded during the high season, but there will be enough space for everyone due to its size. Entrance is free, and beach territory is equipped with water closets, shower cabins, and drinking fountains. For extra charge, you can rent umbrellas and sling chairs, there are also benches for recreation, and summerhouses with tables.

Special rubber paths lead to the sea, and places for safe swimming are marked with buoys, flags, and information stands. With the hundred meter intervals, beach rescuers' towers are installed; moreover, order is provided by police and coastal guards. In summer, beach rescuers are on duty from 10 AM to 6 PM, and in other time, swimming is prohibited. Poorly visible ebbs and flows, that can become a serious problem for unexperienced swimmers, are dangerous.

On the beach, you can enjoy sports, play volleyball, have fun with water games, rent a boat, a kayak, or a catamaran. There is a special place for fishing fans, however, first, they have to acquire the special license.

The most convenient means of transport to get to the beach is surface metro with the closest station situated five minutes away from the beach. It is reasonable to leave your car several stops away from Brighton Beach, or to park it on adjacent streets - there are few equipped parking lots by the beach.

When is the best time to go?
