Tybee Island beach

Tybee Island Beach is a wide sandy beach on the coast of the barrier island of the same name, which is located in Georgia, just 20 minutes from Savannah. It is curious that the name of this area was given by the Yuchi tribe and means “salt” in translation. Thanks to the clean sand on the shore and warm waters, this area has become famous as a popular resort for families and active water activities since the late 80s of the 20th century.

Beach description

The entire long beach coast of the island is divided into 3 parts: southern, central and northern. The south beach is the most popular area. It is here that usually has the most vacationers. It is attractive because of

  • soft sand and slight waves, which make the beach especially popular among families with children;
  • a pier located here from which you can go fishing;
  • the presence of an indoor pavilion where you can buy food and drinks;
  • summer concerts and festivals that are held here, the arena for which usually becomes an indoor pavilion near the pier

There are usually fewer vacationers on the central section of Tybee Island beach, since the infrastructure here is less developed than on the southern outskirts. But in terms of beauty and purity, this part of the coast is not worse than others and is also attractive for a vacation. Usually those who stay on the island in hotels located nearby this site rest here.

The northern beach is located closest to Savannah, and near it is an old lighthouse and Fort Screven.

  • The sand on the shore here is not as clean and soft as on other parts of the coast of the island interspersed with numerous shells.
  • The atmosphere of the beach is more quiet and calm contributing to privacy and relaxation.

From the northern outskirts you can reach an even more secluded corner – the river beach on the banks of the Savannah River.

When is the best time to go?

To lay off on the beaches of the mainland, it is best to come in the summer, when a sufficiently warm temperature is settled for swimming. Places like Florida or the Hawaiian Islands are comfortable all year round.

Infrastructure

On the coast of Taipei Island you can find maximum comfort – the infrastructure here is quite well developed:

  • on the southern outskirts there are many cafes, restaurants, souvenir shops and mini-hotels;
  • on the central section of the beach there are several cafes, hotels and one restaurant with the ocean view;
  • on the northern coast there is only one restaurant on the beach and several ones in the vicinity. But here you can also find showers and some vacation homes

Cafe owners usually offer to rent sun loungers. Near the south beach there is a large and convenient parking lot (paid). There is also a small equipped area for cars on the northern outskirts. The ocean water quality is monitored weekly.

There are comfortable bike paths laid on the entire coast for lovers of cycling. You can rent fishing rods on the south beach near the pier. Kayak rentals are available for lovers of water adventures.

You can stay at the hotel Admiral’s Inn (in the southern part of the beach that is closest to the ocean), at Sea And Breeze Hotel And Condo (in the central part) or at Tybee Island Inn (the north beach is just 5 minutes walk).

Useful information

  1. You can rent kayaks and go on an exciting coastal trip exploring the picturesque coast of the island together with a guide-instructor. Usually the starting point of such walks is the southern edge of the island. When traveling, you can even meet dolphins, which often flash in the ocean around the island.
  2. On the coast you can stroll to the old 47-meter lighthouse of the 18th century, one of the few in North America that still operates, and visit the thematic museum located next to it.   Wedding photoshoots are often taken near the lighthouse.
  3. You can also admire the remains of an ancient fort near the beach, which used to protect the approach to Savannah. While resting on the island of Taipei with children, you should visit the Marine Science Center.
  4. Every year in October, a pirate festival is held in Taipei turning it into a real monastery of 'pirates'. It is necessary to know that the entire coast of the island is not controlled by rescuers, and therefore it is worth taking care of water safety on your own.
