Tybee Island beach

Tybee Island Beach, a sprawling sandy haven on the coast of the barrier island sharing its name, lies in Georgia, a mere 20 minutes from Savannah. Intriguingly, the area's name, bestowed by the Yuchi tribe, translates to "salt." Renowned for its pristine sands and balmy waters, Tybee Island has been celebrated as a favored resort for families and enthusiasts of aquatic sports since the late 1980s.

Beach description

Welcome to Tybee Island Beach, a coastal paradise divided into three distinct areas: the southern, central, and northern shores. Each offers a unique experience for those planning the perfect beach vacation.

The southern beach is the most popular destination, bustling with vacationers drawn to its many attractions:

  • Soft sand and gentle waves, creating an ideal setting for families with children;
  • A pier perfect for fishing enthusiasts;
  • An indoor pavilion offering a variety of food and drinks;
  • Summer concerts and festivals, with the pavilion often serving as the main venue.

The central section of Tybee Island Beach sees fewer visitors, offering a more tranquil experience. Despite its less developed infrastructure, it rivals the other areas in beauty and cleanliness, making it a hidden gem for those seeking a peaceful retreat. It's particularly favored by guests of nearby hotels.

At the northern beach, located closest to Savannah, history buffs can explore an old lighthouse and Fort Screven. Here, the shore is sprinkled with numerous shells, creating a unique landscape:

  • The sand may not be as pristine as in other areas, but it has its own rugged charm;
  • The atmosphere is quieter, providing a serene environment for those seeking privacy and relaxation.

For an even more secluded escape, venture to the river beach along the banks of the Savannah River, accessible from the northern outskirts.

When is the Best Time to Visit?

The East Coast of the USA boasts a variety of picturesque beaches that are perfect for vacationers. To make the most of your beach holiday, timing is key. Here's when you should consider planning your trip:

  • Summer (June to August): The quintessential beach season. This is when the weather is warmest, and the water temperatures are ideal for swimming. Beach towns are bustling with activities and events.
  • Late Spring (May) and Early Fall (September to early October): Best for those seeking fewer crowds. The weather is still warm enough for beach activities, and the ocean remains swimmable, especially in the southern parts of the East Coast.
  • Winter and Early Spring (November to April): Not recommended for beach vacations due to cooler temperatures. However, this period offers the lowest rates for accommodations.

Ultimately, the best time for a beach vacation on the East Coast depends on your preferences for weather, water activities, and crowd levels. Summer offers the full beach experience, while the shoulder seasons provide a more relaxed atmosphere with plenty of sunny days.

Useful information

  1. You can rent kayaks and go on an exciting coastal trip exploring the picturesque coast of the island together with a guide-instructor. Usually the starting point of such walks is the southern edge of the island. When traveling, you can even meet dolphins, which often flash in the ocean around the island.
  2. On the coast you can stroll to the old 47-meter lighthouse of the 18th century, one of the few in North America that still operates, and visit the thematic museum located next to it.   Wedding photoshoots are often taken near the lighthouse.
  3. You can also admire the remains of an ancient fort near the beach, which used to protect the approach to Savannah. While resting on the island of Taipei with children, you should visit the Marine Science Center.
  4. Every year in October, a pirate festival is held in Taipei turning it into a real monastery of 'pirates'. It is necessary to know that the entire coast of the island is not controlled by rescuers, and therefore it is worth taking care of water safety on your own.
