Coney Island is a peninsula in the southern part of New York city. It is famous for 4.5-kilometer beach with the wide coast (to 150 m) and snow white sand. There are several parks with bicycle and walkways, architectural monuments of the late 19th - early 20th century.
The local beach is characterized by smooth depth increase, medium waves, and cool water. Sand is clean - all garbage is collected daily and sent for recycling. The local ocean is characterized by emerald color, soft bottom, and almost complete absence of algae in the coastal area.
Coney Island Beach is decorated with a tremendous wooden pier equipped with benches, viewpoints, and lanterns. It gives the majestic view of the Atlantic Ocean, the amusement park, coast, and remote districts of New York.
Coney Island offers the following activities for its guests:
- merry-go-round, rollercoaster, fairground ride, and other recreational facilities in the local amusement park;
- attending sports competitions (volleyball, baseball, hockey);

Most visitors of the beach are New Yorkers and numerous guests of the capital. Families with children, romantic couples, friend companies and tourist groups come here. Crime activity is very low here, and air is very clean air (especially in comparison with the other city districts).
Interesting fact: Coney Island is a motherland of rollercoaster. The first ride appeared here as early as in 1887. Pastry cream was also invented here. It was invented by local ice cream vendors (Khor brothers) who were looking for means to inhibit ice cream melting.
Today, the beach is absolutely free. But it hasn't always been so: before 1922, New Yorkers were paying 5 cents for ocean access.
When is the best time to go?
To lay off on the beaches of the mainland, it is best to come in the summer, when a sufficiently warm temperature is settled for swimming. Places like Florida or the Hawaiian Islands are comfortable all year round.

The swimming season in Coney Island lasts from middle June to late September. In cold weather, people walk and jog here, and enjoy the ocean view from the picturesque pier. Abe Stark ice rink and MCU Park stadium are open on the beach all year long - hockey and baseball teams of middle division play there.
The New York Aquarium is worth special attention: residence of penguins, sea bears, dolphins, seals, and walruses. It is also a home to hundreds species of fish, rare amphibians and mammals.
If you visit Coney Island, don't forget to have a dinner in Nathan’s Famous cafeteria. They also held here the annual world hot dog eating championship - a tournament with a hundred years of history. Moreover, you can taste a hot dog made according to the hundred-years-old recipe.
