Cape May Beach

Cape May Beach, a picturesque expanse of sand, graces one of the oldest resorts in the USA, named in honor of the Dutch captain who first explored the region. Since the 18th century, this resort has captivated vacationers, earning a reputation as the premier destination for a beach holiday. It's no wonder that Cape May Beach has consistently ranked among the top ten beaches in America and is celebrated as one of the five most scenic shores in New Jersey.

Beach description

Cape May Beach, nestled at the southern tip of New Jersey, marks the confluence of the Atlantic Ocean and Delaware Bay. Renowned for its scenic coastline, this destination is a favorite among families with children and retirees. The beachfront, boasting nearly 4 kilometers of pristine, powdery white sand, runs parallel to the charming Beach Avenue promenade.

For those planning a getaway to this idyllic location, it's essential to be mindful of several key points:

  • Swimming at Cape May Beach is permitted exclusively within the areas marked by restrictive buoys;
  • Skimboarding is allowed, but only under the vigilant eyes of lifeguards;
  • Anglers are welcome to fish in the eastern section of the beach, but only after 5 p.m.;
  • An entrance pass is mandatory to enjoy the beach at Cape May.

The beach's excellent wind and wave conditions create an ideal environment for surfing, though it's important to adhere to the aforementioned swimming restrictions. Visitors should note that while bringing food and beverages to the beach is acceptable, alcohol is strictly prohibited to avoid potential fines. Additionally, during the summer months, dogs are not permitted on the beach.

When is the best time to go?

The East Coast of the USA boasts a variety of picturesque beaches that are perfect for vacationers. To make the most of your beach holiday, timing is key. Here's when you should consider planning your trip:

  • Summer (June to August): The quintessential beach season. This is when the weather is warmest, and the water temperatures are ideal for swimming. Beach towns are bustling with activities and events.
  • Late Spring (May) and Early Fall (September to early October): Best for those seeking fewer crowds. The weather is still warm enough for beach activities, and the ocean remains swimmable, especially in the southern parts of the East Coast.
  • Winter and Early Spring (November to April): Not recommended for beach vacations due to cooler temperatures. However, this period offers the lowest rates for accommodations.

Ultimately, the best time for a beach vacation on the East Coast depends on your preferences for weather, water activities, and crowd levels. Summer offers the full beach experience, while the shoulder seasons provide a more relaxed atmosphere with plenty of sunny days.

Infrastructure

The entire coast is equipped with toilets and showers every 800 meters. It is advisable to bring your own beach umbrellas and sun loungers. While it is possible to rent them here, they are available in limited quantities, and there often aren't enough for all vacationers. A free parking lot is located on a small side street just a few blocks from the coast. During the season, lifeguards patrol the beach from morning until 6 p.m.

  • Near the coast, you can discover a variety of cafes, beachside restaurants, and food stalls.
  • Restaurants in Fisherman's Harbor also boast a magnificent view of the bay.
  • Along the waterfront, there are diverse attractions and shopping pavilions.

Most hotels are conveniently situated near the promenade, allowing you to easily find the most comfortable accommodation option close to the beach. For instance, you could choose ICONA Cape May, which is directly opposite the beach, The Grand Hotel, a luxurious hotel near the beach, or Congress Hall, a little further from the coast but located in the very historical heart of the resort.
