Kalihiwai beach

The beach is located in the north of the Hawaiian island Kauai and is considered one of the most comfortable and picturesque beaches on the coast. The beach borders the River Kalihiwai that flows into the Pacific Ocean on the west.

Beach description

The small arch-shaped sandy bay is surrounded by a thick forest and grows close to the coast and fills the air with heady aroma and creates natural shadow. You can leave your car, set up a hammock or a camp under the trees if you get a special permission beforehand. There's no typical beach infrastructure on Kalihiwai (besides the few portable toilets), so you'll need to take care of everything necessary ahead of your trip here. It's quite calm and quiet here during Summer, like on the north coast, so you can bring your young children with you. The season of high waves starts in Winter, and Kalihiwai welcomes large crowds of surfers and other extreme sports enthusiasts during that period.

The beach isn't equipped with rescue stations and first-aid posts, so it's advised to swim in the mouth of River Kalihiwai, where natural pools with cool but safe water are formed. The river is also perfect for kayaking, picnics and fishing.

When is the best time to go?

To lay off on the beaches of the mainland, it is best to come in the summer, when a sufficiently warm temperature is settled for swimming. Places like Florida or the Hawaiian Islands are comfortable all year round.
