Lanikai beach
Lanikai Beach, renowned as one of the most exquisite and tranquil retreats in Hawaii, is nestled along the coast of the eponymous resort area of Kailua on the island of Oahu. Its name, meaning "heavenly ocean," is a fitting description. Gazing upon the surreal azure waters, one can't help but feel the seamless blend of ocean and sky, creating a truly celestial experience.

Beach description
Spanning almost a kilometer, the coastal strip of soft, light sand - reminiscent of fine powder - and a significant area of shallow water beckon families with children to Lanikai. While the shore often bustles with vacationers, most are local residents from the adjacent residential area. This proximity makes access to this public beach somewhat challenging for others wishing to unwind in its serene embrace. The only way to reach it is by strolling along the coast, connecting with other neighboring beaches.
- The ocean waters here warm up splendidly, reaching temperatures of up to +26°C, inviting you to spend ample time swimming rather than merely lounging on the shore.
- Lanikai is distinguished by its windward waters, which, unlike most Hawaiian beaches, are notably tranquil. This serenity, coupled with the shallow waters, ensures a safe and enjoyable experience for families, even those with young children.
- On weekdays, it is possible to find a secluded spot, but on weekends and during peak seasons, the coast invariably teems with visitors. It is advisable to arrive early in the morning when the heat is mild and the crowds are sparse.
While diving is not particularly popular at Lanikai due to subpar visibility and the absence of coral reefs teeming with fish, coastal kayaking reigns as the main attraction. Beyond the traditional beach holiday, Lanikai also serves as an idyllic setting for photo shoots and is a favorite among photographers. As such, it is not uncommon to encounter renowned models against its picturesque backdrop.
The local scenery is further enhanced by the presence of two petite islets, known as the Mokuluas, set against the ocean's expanse. It's no wonder that Lanikai Beach is often touted as the most beautiful on Oahu, with its vistas frequently gracing travel guides dedicated to the island.
When is the best time to go?
The best time to visit the Hawaii Islands for a beach vacation largely depends on the traveler's preferences for weather, crowds, and prices. However, there are generally two periods considered ideal:
- Late April to Early June: Spring offers a sweet spot with less rainfall and milder temperatures. The islands are less crowded, allowing for a more relaxed experience on the beaches and at other attractions.
- September to Mid-December: Fall is another optimal time, as the summer crowds have dissipated and the weather remains warm and pleasant. This period also avoids the winter rainy season, ensuring more sunny days on the beach.
Both time frames offer the opportunity to enjoy Hawaii's stunning beaches, warm ocean waters, and outdoor activities under ideal conditions. Whether you're looking to surf, snorkel, or simply soak up the sun, these periods provide the perfect balance of good weather and fewer tourists, making for an unforgettable beach vacation in Hawaii.

Infrastructure
The main disadvantage of this picturesque coast is the lack of beach infrastructure, even at a minimum level. On the shore, there are no toilets, showers, or even parking, and the beach itself is not monitored by lifeguards. Ample parking spaces can be found near the neighboring Kailua beach, but even at the entrance to the shore of Lanikai, finding legal parking on the weekend can be challenging.
- It is advisable to bring beach umbrellas with you – they are not available for rent, and the sun can be intensely hot.
- Bringing food and water is also recommended, as there are no cafes or kiosks on the coast of Lanikai. Shopping can be done in Kailua, the center of which is only a 5-10 minute walk from the beach. There, you will find a variety of shops, cafes, and restaurants.
You can stay at Lanikai Beach Rentals – a charming Bed & Breakfast. Accommodations are available in the city of Kailua and in houses near the beach. Additionally, the quaint Lanikai Breeze cottage is situated close to the coast.

- Comparatively not far from the coast of Lanikai, two pyramidal forms of the island rise in the ocean. The larger northern islet is especially popular with kayakers who can get out on its coast. Visiting the smaller southern island is prohibited because it has been declared a bird sanctuary.
- When resting on Lanikai, you should not miss the opportunity to book a kayaking tour near Mokuluas, which can also be combined with exciting snorkeling in the vicinity of the islands. The resort has enough kayaking clubs where you can order such services or rent kayaks for walking.
- The convenient location of the beach allows you to watch the moon rise over the Mokuluas Islands, which is a particularly bewitching view of the full moon.
