Makena beach

The beach is located in the southwest of the Hawaiian island Maui and is the coastal area of the Makena National Park. The giant coastline (2,5 km long and about 50 m wide) is covered in soft golden sand and surrounded by exotic palm trees and bizarrely shaped trees. The beach is protected by the coral reef from the seaside, and picturesque mountains formed by lava fossils frame the edges of it.

Beach description

Makena Beach is divided into two areas - Big Beach and Little Beach.

  • The Big Beach is equipped with toilets, showers, benches and tables for picnics. There are also rental stores with sports equipment, and a golf course is located nearby. A perfect place for surfing, snorkeling and other water sports. Rescue workers guarantee safety of the visitors and warn about the current change and sudden weather changes. Overall, swimming here is safe, just don't forget the basic means of precaution.
  • The Little Beach is located a bit to the north and is separated from the Big Beach by a line of lava fossils. It's a lot smaller in size (about 300 meters) and much more secluded as well. There are no rescue workers here and no typical beach infrastructure, and you will encounter nudists and gay people. Hawaiian parties accompanied by drums with lively dancing are organized right on the shore during weekends.

When is the best time to go?

To lay off on the beaches of the mainland, it is best to come in the summer, when a sufficiently warm temperature is settled for swimming. Places like Florida or the Hawaiian Islands are comfortable all year round.
