Papaohaku beach

The beach is located on the west coast of Molokai Island and is one of the widest and longest beaches of Hawaii (3,2 km long and 100 m wide). It's surrounded by scenic sandy dunes and bizarre prickly trees. It isn't protected by a reef so, regardless of the season, a strong wash can be seen here. Swimming also isn't safe here due to the strong ocean currents that flow close to the shore. Therefore the beach is frequently visited by those who like picnics and slow walks along the ocean.

Beach description

Papaohaku is equipped with everything necessary, toilets, showers, picnic tables and a comfortable parking lot are all available here. The beach is also under the watch of lifeguards who will be able to perform first aid if needed.

Military training took place on Papaohaku during the Second World War, so one needs to be careful when walking on the sand as it may hide metal, remains of barbed wire and other dangerous objects. Sand was also extracted from the beach years ago, so there are a few abandoned tunnels still remaining on the beach that can be dangerous. You need to be very careful when being near the prickly kiawe trees, as stepping or sitting on its thorns can be quite painful.

When is the best time to go?

To lay off on the beaches of the mainland, it is best to come in the summer, when a sufficiently warm temperature is settled for swimming. Places like Florida or the Hawaiian Islands are comfortable all year round.
