Platia Ammos beach

Platia Ammos, one of the finest beaches in the Larisa prefecture, is nestled in the northeastern part of Thessaly. Access to this hidden gem is somewhat limited; there is no direct road leading to it. Visitors can reach Platia Ammos either from Stomio or the adjacent village of Kokkino Nero. This seclusion is a blessing in disguise, as even during the peak season, the beach remains pleasantly uncrowded, ensuring that you can always find a serene spot to relax and soak in the sun.

Beach description

Stretching over approximately 700 meters, the shoreline of Platia Ammos beach is adorned with a striking blend of fine black and white pebbles. Encircled by verdant hills, some of which cascade down to the water's edge, the beach offers natural shade. Beneath this canopy, you can pitch a tent and immerse yourself in the wilderness, enjoying a few days of solitude amidst nature.

Families with children often favor the left side of the beach, where the seabed is pleasantly flat, the descent into the sea is gentle, and the waters are relatively shallow. In contrast, the right side boasts rugged cliffs, offering an ideal spot for diving and snorkeling enthusiasts seeking privacy. It is essential to wear protective footwear to avoid injuries from sea urchins.

Beachgoers have the convenience of renting sun loungers and umbrellas, ensuring comfort during their seaside retreat. Additionally, two quaint taverns situated along the coast provide the perfect opportunity to indulge in a light meal while savoring the beachfront ambiance.

When is the best time to go?
  • The Western Aegean coast of Turkey is a splendid destination for a beach vacation, offering a blend of beautiful beaches, historical sites, and charming coastal towns. Determining the best time to visit depends on your preferences for weather, crowd levels, and local events.

    • June to September: This period marks the high season, with July and August being the peak months. The weather is hot and sunny, perfect for beach activities and swimming. However, these months also see the largest crowds and highest prices.
    • May and October: For those seeking a balance between pleasant weather and fewer tourists, the shoulder months of May and October are ideal. The sea remains warm enough for swimming, and the beaches are less crowded.
    • April and November: These months are less suitable for beachgoers due to cooler temperatures and unpredictable weather. However, they can be great for exploring the region's cultural attractions without the summer crowds.

In conclusion, if a perfect beach vacation is what you're after, aim for the late spring to early autumn period, with June and September offering the best combination of good weather and manageable tourist numbers.
