São Conrado beach

If you do not like the pathos of Leblon and the party life of the beaches of Copocabana and Ipanema, consider this option as San Conrada. This is also an elite area, but luxurious mansions in it are diluted with more affordable housing and condominiums. This coast offers outdoor activities and affordable service at affordable prices. Here the inhabitants of Favela and middle-class citizens mostly rest. The nature of the rest is active and at the same time laid-back. It is somewhat distant from the tourist areas, so it is not as busy as other beaches in Rio. If you want to get a lot of bright memorable emotions - you are definitely here!

Beach description

the Official name is Gavea beach. San-Conardo is named after a small Church located nearby, which was built in the early 20th century by Conrado Jacob Niemeyer. The beach begins at the end of Avenida Niemeyer and extends over three kilometers of the tunnel to são Conrado. It can be reached by bus or car, passing through the tunnel under Dois Irmaos. Near the beach there are many Parking spaces, so you will have where to Park your car. Although if you rent a room in the vicinity, you can reach the shore on foot. Some rent a Bicycle and enjoy a walk along a special path for cyclists, which goes along the coastline.

the Beach is a white sand line, which is cut by high turquoise waves. They are ideal for venerable surfers, but for ordinary swimming-are rather dangerous. If badly keep on water-it is better not to risk. Moreover, the bottom of the coast is not always sandy. On the beach is the largest seaside granite rock in the world - Pedra da Gavea. Its spurs descend into the water, so in areas near the rock under the water there are large boulders.

On weekdays, the beach is sparsely populated, as the main percentage of tourists are local due to its remoteness from tourist centers. This beach is for young and active people. Or not necessarily young, but necessarily active! Therefore, couples with children or lovers of passive recreation is better to choose another beach in Rio. Fortunately, they abound. Well, if you are ready to fly a hang glider, paragliding or surfing, São Conrado Beach is just what you need!

Useful information

  1. Gavea rock, which seems to grow out of the sand of São Conrado, attracts many people with its inaccessibility. However, it is not as impregnable as it seems. It is quite realistic to climb to its top. But the climb, and then the return descent, can take up to 8 hours. Be prepared for this and take care of comfortable shoes and stock up on food.
  2. On the hills above the beach there is the favela of Rocinha - this is the largest and most famous favela (slum area) in Rio de Janeiro with more than 200,000 inhabitants. Today it is also the safest. Guided tours of it are conducted, during which tourists visit churches, shops and even some residential buildings.
  3. The Sambo school Acadêmicos da Rocinha is located near the beach, so vacationers can watch groups of sambo wrestlers practicing their techniques right on the sand.
