Beach description
Welcome to General Beaches, a 26-kilometer stretch of sandy shore, dotted with hundreds of secluded bays. Each bay boasts majestic cliffs, immense boulders, and picturesque landscapes, complemented by a gradual increase in water depth. The local sea is renowned for its cleanliness, shallowness, and warmth, inviting swimmers as early as mid-May.
During the Soviet era, General Beaches fell under the jurisdiction of the Air Force, rendering it off-limits to civilians and construction. This preserved its natural beauty and protected it from the detrimental impacts of human activity.
In those days, only high-ranking military officials were privileged to vacation here, which is how the beaches earned their distinctive name. Today, they are open to all, drawing enthusiasts of untouched nature and serene retreats. Families, yoga enthusiasts, esoteric seekers, and nudists alike find solace here. The multitude of bays and their separation ensure that visitors can enjoy their activities without disturbing one another.
Another highlight of General Beaches is its impeccable ecology. Devoid of highways, large cities, or industrial plants, the area maintains a level of cleanliness that is rare to find along any coast, let alone in the former USSR. The clear waters are complemented by the presence of vibrant birds and colorful insects inhabiting the surrounding flora.
Despite its "wild" nature, General Beaches offers a plethora of attractions. Young children delight in swimming, constructing stone and sand castles, and collecting exquisite shells. Adults can explore bays and grottoes, dive with scuba gear, scale rocks, stroll along the shore, capture memories through photography, and relish the company of others. Numerous spots near the beach are ideal for setting up a grill.
Owing to its seclusion, General Beaches remains uncrowded. On weekdays, it's not uncommon to claim a bay as your own private retreat. While weekends attract locals from nearby cities, the expansive space ensures there's room for everyone.
Advice for Parents: Always supervise your children or select a safe area for them to play. The terrain includes numerous grottoes and steep cliffs, and it's important to note that there are no lifeguards along the entire 26-kilometer coastline.
Adults can ascend the local mountains without specialized climbing gear, following trails that lead to some of the summits. Be aware that the area is home to potentially dangerous wildlife, including poisonous spiders, snakes, and tarantulas. Encounters are rare, but for peace of mind, it's advisable to bring a first-aid kit equipped with antiallergic medication.
Optimal Visiting Times
The best time to visit Crimea for a beach vacation is typically during the summer months, when the weather is warm and sunny. Here's a structured guide to help you plan your trip:
- June to August: This is the peak season for beachgoers. The temperatures are usually in the comfortable range of 20-30°C (68-86°F), perfect for swimming and sunbathing. However, these months can also be the most crowded.
- September: If you prefer a quieter vacation, September is ideal. The water remains warm from the summer heat, but the crowds have significantly diminished.
- Late May and Early June: These times offer a good balance between pleasant weather and fewer tourists. The sea might be a bit cooler, but the beaches are less crowded, making it a great time for those looking for a more relaxed atmosphere.
Regardless of when you choose to visit, Crimea's stunning coastline and rich cultural history provide a memorable beach vacation experience. Just remember to check the local travel advisories and entry requirements before planning your trip.

Infrastructure
Within a 20 km radius of the beaches, several pensions offer a welcoming family atmosphere. These establishments provide spacious rooms and the option of 3 or 5 meals a day. Many feature amenities such as gyms, SPA centers, water slides, and cozy cafes. Guests can enjoy volleyball, football, and tennis courts, sunbathing areas with comfortable sunbeds, pristine beaches, and well-maintained gardens.
However, the General Beaches lack certain facilities. There are no toilets or other conveniences, and the absence of trees means that shade is only available under a sun umbrella that you must bring yourself. Visitors should come prepared with fresh water (as local springs often dry out), food, medicine, and firewood. The sole attraction is the rental of boats, which can be arranged with local residents upon agreement.
The beaches are situated 26 km north of Kerch and are accessible solely by private transport. Given the subpar condition of local roads, it is advisable to rent a durable SUV for the journey.
