Zhemchuzhny beach

Zhemchuzhny is the second city beach of Feodosia, which is located in the area of the Aivazovskaya railway station. It got its name thanks to small particles of shells mixed with sand and cast in the sun with a pearly shine. The length of the Zhemchuzhny Beach is about a kilometer, the width is up to fifty meters. This is one of the most popular holiday destinations for locals and visitors of the city, therefore it is always quite crowded.

Beach description

Visitors are attracted by the relative proximity to the city center, shallow sea and soft sand. Especially there are a lot of families with children on the beach - for kids there is plenty of entertainment and you can safely let them go into the water. The bottom is sandy, flat and comfortable, places for safe swimming are fenced with buoys. Fifty meters from the shore there is a stone reef where you can go snorkeling.

Despite the fact that the beach is public and free, it is very clean and well maintained. Algae and household rubbish are regularly cleaned and disposed of; violators face a fine for smoking, drinking alcohol and dog walking.

From entertainment - riding a catamaran, banana, donut tube and jet ski, water skiing and parachuting. Inflatable slides and trampolines are provided for children. For a bite to eat, check out Yellow Fish, a cozy beachfront café with excellent cuisine and helpful staff. Traditional boiled corn, pastries, sweets, as well as drinks and ice cream are worn on the beach by local merchants.

City shuttle buses and minibuses run to the beach, the closest stop is “Beach Street”. You can also get on foot, following the city promenade in the opposite direction from the center. But it’s not very convenient to come by personal transport - access from the city center is difficult, organized parking is absent, so traffic jams and congestion often occur.

When is the best time to go?

Weather conditions in Crimea depend on the place where you will rest: while on the south coast it is relatively warm and humid, then in other places it can be cooler and drier. The period between late May and the first half of July inclusive is considered the ideal time for a trip when the air and sea have already warmed up (23-25 degrees), but the real heat has not yet come. If you prefer warmer weather, pick out the second half of July or early August.

Useful information

In addition to the beautiful sandy beaches, Feodosia is famous for its unique historical and cultural heritage. Few people know that Theodosius (in the past Kafa) - one of the oldest cities in Europe, was founded in the 6th century A.D. and in size surpassed Constantinople. To return a few millennia ago, just wander along the central streets, admire the medieval buildings and the remains of the Genoese fortress, look into ancient temples and mosques. Art lovers will be interested in visiting the famous Aivazovsky art gallery, where his best canvases are kept, and connoisseurs of Russian literature will surely enjoy visiting the Alexander Green Museum and the apartment of the Tsvetaev’s sisters.

Active tourists will also have something to do, because all two dozen kilometers from the city is a unique mountain reserve Karadag, the pearl of the eastern Crimea. You can see it both from the sea, and during an organized walking tour (independent tourists are not allowed to enter Karadag), tickets are sold at any travel agency in the city.
