Nalaguraidhoo Island beach

Nalaguraidhoo Island, also called Sun Island, is located in Southern part of Ari Atoll, part of the Maldives archipelago. Locals call it the "Flower of the seas" for its bizarre shape and unique combination of white beaches, turquoise sea and emerald green lush tropical gardens. Here is located one of the biggest resorts of Maldives Islands, Sun Island Resort & Spa. It was officially opened on 24 May 1999 by the President of the Republic, and in 2016 received the prestigious award "Leading eco-resort in the Maldives".

Beach description

An island is quite big (1.5km long and 450m wide) and stretched to the West and East. It is surrounded by a giant barrier reef, which forms a cozy picturesque lagoon of amazing turquoise hue. The color of the sea seems even brighter against the white coast, covered with soft, like powdered sugar, sand and dense greenery that covers the inner part of the island.

Reef comes right to the shore, so it's not necessary to come into the water to watch exotic fish. Life in bungalow allows to watch the underwater world right from the room.

The whole island is surrounded by beautiful beaches with big coconut palms. In their shade it is nice to relax in the heat of the day and soak up the hammock with a refreshing cocktail in your hands.

In the Southern part the sea is more shallow and calm, there is no wind and during the high season it can be very hot. The beach here is thin, the entrance to the water is gentle and safe. The horizon is partly hidden by water bungalows, built right on the reef, so the Northern beach is more popular.

It's wider and more spacious, equipped with sunbeds, sunshades, bars, and a swimming pool. Here always blow fresh winds which create waves. There is a small island in front of the beach, where there is an Italian restaurant. It's surrounded by open terraces from which the fantastic view opens. Here also come numerous marine life, which can be fed bread crumbs. Thanks to this the area near the restaurant is perfect for snorkeling, here tourists can actually find stingrays, manta rays, moray eels, turtles and even small sharks. Comfortable stairs descend from the terraces into the water, there are showers and changing rooms.

Perhaps, the most picturesque and romantic beach is located in the Eastern part of the island, on a sand bar that protrudes far into the sea. From its open side, a fresh breeze is blowing, catching up with the waves, the leeward part is quieter and calmer. The sea along the spit is quite deep, about 2-3 m, so it's great for swimming and diving without fear of scratching on a sharp reef. Wedding ceremonies and romantic parties are often held on the beach, as well as beach discos and spectacular shows.

From the Male International Airport to Nalaguraidhoo tourists can easily get by speed boat or seaplane, which takes about one hour.

When is the best time to go?

Maldives – is an equatorial country with a tropical climate, where the weather is always warm at + 27-30ºС. But the islands have some seasonal features. From mid-April to the end of October it often rains here. The dry season lasts from November till April. At this time, the initially clear sea becomes completely transparent, and the sun illuminates in the sky 12 hours a day.

Important: A large amount of plankton is collected in October and November off the coast, which is why the ocean takes on a slightly unclear hue. On the other side – plankton illuminates the sea at night, creating an indescribable picture. At this time, coastal waters are filled with stingrays – fabulously fascinating creatures that are in no way inferior to the dolphins.
