Thundufushi Island beach

The name of the island, Thundufushi, in the Maldivian language (Dhivehi), means "Point Island." Located in the Alif Dhaal Atoll (South Ari), this tiny island, spanning no more than 11 hectares, was uninhabited 30-40 years ago. Today, it has transformed into a luxurious five-star resort, providing some of the finest conditions for diving and other water sports in the Maldives. Its beach area boasts a broad, natural expanse, nestled along the shores of a stunning lagoon.

Beach description

The coastline of Thundufushi Island is adorned with soft, white, fine-grained sand. It has a gentle slope, which, combined with a sandy bottom, makes the entrance to the water both safe and convenient. A warm lagoon with clean and clear water is the ideal setting for swimming and snorkeling.

The beach is part of the resort managed by the Diamonds Thudufushi hotel. Its main visitors are hotel guests:

  • Families and couples in love;
  • Youthful groups;
  • Lone travelers who appreciate romantic solitude and relaxation;
  • Tourists from neighboring islands.

A plethora of palm trees and other tropical plants flourishing on the beach render Thundufushi exceptionally green and picturesque. The lush greenery provides a natural canopy, offering a pleasant refuge from the heat of the day. While spending time on the beach, visitors can:

  • Swim, dive, and sunbathe;
  • Sail on catamarans and paddle canoes;
  • Explore the underwater world through snorkeling and diving;
  • Engage in windsurfing;
  • Play beach volleyball.

As the beach is situated on an island, access is exclusively via a seaplane flight to Thundufushi. The distance from Malé to Thundufushi Island is approximately 99 km, with the flight duration being 35-40 minutes. An alternative mode of transport is by boat; however, this option is not recommended for travel from Malé International Airport to the island, as the journey will span several hours.

When is the best time to visit?

The Maldives, with its idyllic beaches and crystal-clear waters, is a year-round destination, but the best time to visit for a beach vacation is during the dry season, which runs from November to April. This period is characterized by lower humidity, less rainfall, and plenty of sunshine, making it ideal for sunbathing, snorkeling, and diving.

  • November to April: This is the peak tourist season, with perfect weather conditions for beach activities. The sea is calm, offering excellent visibility for underwater adventures.
  • May to October: Known as the monsoon season, this period sees more rain and stronger winds. However, it's also a time when the islands are less crowded, and resorts may offer lower rates.

For those seeking the ultimate beach vacation, timing your visit during the dry season ensures the most comfortable and enjoyable experience. However, if you're looking to avoid crowds and don't mind occasional showers, the off-peak months can also be a great time to explore the Maldives' natural beauty.
