Agios Stephanos beach

Agios Stefanos Avliotes - a picturesque beach along the coastline of the village of the same name on the north-west coast of Corfu. The name of the area translates as "St. Stephen" and is associated with a particularly revered Saint in Greece, after whom an old Church on the coast was named. Subsequently, the name spread to the settlement and the beach. The Adriatic Sea here is a single border separating the coast of Corfu from the shores of Italy.

Beach description

Agios Stefanos Avliotis Beach is located 47 km away from the island's airport. You can get there from Kerkyra by taxi or a rented car in about an hour. You can also rent a boat and get to the beach by sea. However, don't mix up this resort with one of the most wonderful beaches around and a fisherman village of the same name that's located on the north-east of the island.

Surrounded by olive groves, Agios Stefanos Avliotes is a long sandy beach with clear turquoise waters. It's clean and well-kept, which, combined with good services, got it the Blue flag award.

Here are some of the beach's features that you need to take note of:

  • the shore's shape allows for high winds and high waves. The waters here are perfect for windsurfing and kitesurfing;
  • the more distant parts of the beach aren't as well-kept as the rest. The shore isn't dirty, but you can spot seagull feathers and litter sometimes;
  • the descent is smooth, the sand is very soft. Which is one of the reasons tourists like to come with their children.

The atmosphere is calm and safe, which attracts many a visitor. Beautiful landscapes make the beach even more uniquely attractive. The coarse, copper-colored sand on the shore is also unique, and it shines brightly after noon.

When is it better to go?

Greece - a country with a long length from north to south, so the recommendations will vary depending on the place where you are going. The holiday season  begins in May and reaches a peak in July-August: there are too many tourists, and the temperature on the southern islands reaches 40 degrees, which may still not play a role on the beach, but certainly not suitable for sightseeing. So the best time to relax in Greece is the end of spring-beginning of summer or September-October.

Infrastructure

In the central part of the beach, the infrastructure is partially developed. The beach has cafes, bars, and taverns where one can have a tasty, yet not too expensive, dinner. You can rent sling chairs and equipment required for water sports. But there are silence and privacy on the beach end, so there is no special service there.

The infrastructure is well developed in the vilalge itself. There are various stores, cafes, restaurants. Just 0.5 km away, a sea port is situated where you can buy fresh fish from fishermen.

There are 2 modern spacious villas for accommodation «Romanza», the terraces and balconies of which provide the magnificent views on the beach. In the very village, you can book a room in the hotel «Olga», where guests will find apartments with a kitchen and all modern conveniences.

Useful information

The long beach ends with a rock, near which there is a small lake with a clay bottom. Vacationers often use this healing blue clay for spa treatments.

The presence of stone slabs in some places on the beach makes it difficult to enter the sea. It is better to bring special shoes with rubber soles for entering the water.

On the left side of the beach there is a small pier from which sightseeing ships depart for the Diapontic Islands. On the beach, you can watch some of the most colorful sunsets in Corfu.
