Agios Gordios beach

Agios Gordios is a real paradise on the west coast of Corfu. In numerous photos with the beautiful beaches of this Greek island, it is easily recognizable by its cliff protruding from the sea and its rocky relief. The origin of the settlement name and the beach itself next to it is associated with the name of an old church, which is still preserved near the coast. The fact that the legendary Queen frontman loved being here makes this place more attractive.

Beach description

Agios Gordios Beach is located in the picturesque Corfu Bay about 15 km away from the capital. With its turquoise clear waters, wonderful rocks, surrounded by vineyards, olive and orange groves, it is considered to be the best beach on the west of the island.

The shoreline stretches for about 1,5 km. The beach is covered in grainy golden sand, and small pebbles can be seen when you step into water. The descent into the sea is smooth, without drastic depth changes. Deep places can be found 15 meters away from the shore. The warm sea is crystal clear and azure, without heavy waves. You can see seaweed in some spots. If you go a bit further you will find yourself in Porto Timoni which is seen from Agios Gordios, and its main feature are the two small beaches on either side of a rocky hill.

This place is perfect for those who just want to swim and sunbathe without surfing. Agios Gordios is therefore considered a great fit if you want to take your children here. Children can swim near the shore.

You can rarely encounter large crowds here which also makes this Corfu beach a great travel destination. It's popular, but thanks to its length you can find a spot for yourself. The more solitary places are near the rocks. The larger crowds of tourists can be seen in the middle of the beach. The white tops of the rocks in azure waters made Agios Gordios one of the most photographed places on Corfu.

When is the best time to go?

Greece - a country with a long length from north to south, so the recommendations will vary depending on the place where you are going. The holiday season  begins in May and reaches a peak in July-August: there are too many tourists, and the temperature on the southern islands reaches 40 degrees, which may still not play a role on the beach, but certainly not suitable for sightseeing. So the best time to relax in Greece is the end of spring-beginning of summer or September-October.

Infrastructure

It is a civilized beach with the well-developed infrastructure, and the resort itself is very popular among the tourists from Western Europe. Thos who drive to the beach on their own cars should remember taht the parking lot here is small, and it cannot give room to all locals and tourists.

The following options are available in terms of residential lease:

  • rooms in small hotels - in the village itself and near the beach, their number is around twenty; the most popular is «Pink Palace» (only 300 m from the sea), where the rock music legend Freddie Mercury was staying;
  • apartments or luxury studios overlooking the sea - there are offers for any budget;
  • ites by the beach - the prices aren't the cheapest.

There are several night bars at the resort, but in the whole, it is a quiet town by the sea. On the beach, there are many cafes offering tasty food, and colorful taverns with local delicacies. Many beach food services offer free deck chairs, so you can combine beach recreation with learning more about local food. The beach also has souvenir stores where you can buy gifts with pure Greek flair.

You can rent sling chairs and sun umbrellas, use washing rooms and changing cabins. You can rent catamarans, hydro scooters, and motor boats. As a rule, all these services are valid only in the central part of the beach.
