Kalami beach

Kalami Beach - a picturesque beach on the north-eastern outskirts of Corfu, which is often called the "black pearl" of the island. Such a poetic name is associated with an unusual shade of the bottom, which breaks through the thickness of turquoise waters when illuminated by the sun. Once this was a closed beach for the British, but now the Germans and the French also like vising it. This is one of the best places on the island for a relatively secluded unforgettable vacation of true romantics.

Beach description

The Kalami Beach is located at the base of the Gimari village in the northeast of Korfu, 22 kilometers away from the capital. Its wide shoreline resembles a horseshoe surrounded by scenic mountains. Getting here feels like time travelling to a different era, where everything slows down. The beach is like an amphitheater: 9 villages with colorful venetian houses are situated on the hills, hidden under shadows of olive groves.

Here are some interesting facts about the beach:

  • Kalami became popular to the ordinary tourist only in the beginning of the 20th century;
  • before that it served as a closed VIP-club beach for tourists from London;
  • White House - a mansion that belonged to the English writer Darrell - still remains here;
  • this "lost heaven" nowadaya attracts tourists who want to enjoy a vacation different from the typical kind you'll find on any other beach

The unique color of the water here is due to the fact that underground springs from the mountains fall here. The shoreline is covered in white flat pebbles, and the shallow waters make this place ideal for families with young children.

This is the reason why married couples and true romantics come here to enjoy the solitude of the picturesque shoreline nature. The beach is very clean, beautiful and well-equipped for your vacation, and the water is so crystal that it's no wonder the beach was marked with the Blue Flag multiple times.

When is the best time to go?

Greece - a country with a long length from north to south, so the recommendations will vary depending on the place where you are going. The holiday season  begins in May and reaches a peak in July-August: there are too many tourists, and the temperature on the southern islands reaches 40 degrees, which may still not play a role on the beach, but certainly not suitable for sightseeing. So the best time to relax in Greece is the end of spring-beginning of summer or September-October.
