Balos beach

Located 55 kilometers from Chania, adjacent to Cape Tigani on the Korikos Peninsula, Balos Beach lies at the extreme northwestern tip of Crete. Here, the waters of three seas that wash over the island converge, creating a stunning tapestry of blue that beckons travelers seeking a picturesque beach vacation.

Beach description

The Place is distinguished by the beauty of its waters, which boast many shades. The water is clean and transparent, and the sand is white, sprinkled with small shells. The beach is suitable for children, as it features a shallow lagoon where the water remains calm in any weather, even during a storm. However, it must be noted that this area is one of the most difficult to reach in all of Crete: there are no roads leading to it, nor do buses serve the area. If you are coming by private transport, the nearest parking place is a few kilometers from the beach. As a result, it is more often visited by organized groups, which travel by ship to explore the neighboring island of Gramvousa (which is considered a pirate's refuge).

Ships depart from Kissamos port and stop at Balos for no more than an hour. Outside of these visits, the beach is not crowded. There are no settlements nearby, and, accordingly, there is no developed tourist infrastructure - no cafes, restaurants, rental services for recreational equipment, or shops. It is recommended to bring all necessities, including a fresh water supply.

When is the best time to go?

The best time to visit Crete for a beach vacation is typically during the late spring to early fall months, when the weather is warm and the Mediterranean Sea is inviting. Here's a breakdown of the optimal periods:

  • Late Spring (May to early June): This is an ideal time for those who prefer a quieter experience. The weather is pleasantly warm, and the tourist crowds have not yet peaked. The sea temperature is getting comfortable for swimming, and the island's flora is in full bloom, adding to the scenic beauty.
  • Summer (late June to August): These are the hottest months, perfect for sunbathing and water activities. Crete's beaches are at their liveliest, with plenty of options for entertainment and dining. However, this is also the high season, so expect more tourists and higher prices.
  • Early Fall (September to October): The temperatures begin to cool slightly, but the sea remains warm enough for swimming. The summer crowds have dissipated, making this a great time for a more relaxed vacation. The weather is still reliable, with plenty of sunny days to enjoy the island's natural beauty.

Ultimately, the best time for a beach vacation in Crete depends on your preferences for weather, water temperature, and crowd levels. Each season offers a unique experience on this beautiful Greek island.
