Kommos beach
The place is located on the shores of Messara Bay, near Kalamaki, a few kilometers north of Matala. There are buses from Heraklion to Matala. The roads are good, you can safely get there by rented car: you have to turn to Kalamaki, almost arriving in Matala.

The beach is mainly sandy. The comfortable way to go to the sea, the bottom is even, although there are stones. There are no capital buildings here, as the site is a protected archaeological zone. Housing is better to search in neighboring villages: in Matala or Kalamaki. But the beach itself is in some way equipped. There is a rental of beach accessories, snack bars, shower, toilet, rescue station. As on most beaches in the Matala area (except those covered by rocks), there are strong winds that are good for kite surfing, but bad for ordinary rest. The wind sometimes breaks and wears sand, drives waves. In addition, as well as on the whole shore, you can watch in the evenings a beautiful sunset going to the sea.
On the edge of the beach is the mouth of a small river, near which the nudists usually stop. Nature is beautiful- dunes, trees, rocks. In summer, in the local sands lay the eggs of the turtle. From cultural attractions - ancient ruins of the Bronze Age. It was here in ancient times that the port city of Fest was located - one of the main centers of the ancient Cretan-Minoan civilization.
When is the best time to go?
Greece - a country with a long length from north to south, so the recommendations will vary depending on the place where you are going. The holiday season begins in May and reaches a peak in July-August: there are too many tourists, and the temperature on the southern islands reaches 40 degrees, which may still not play a role on the beach, but certainly not suitable for sightseeing. So the best time to relax in Greece is the end of spring-beginning of summer or September-October.
