Glika Nera beach

The beach is located west of Chora Sfakion, on the coastline of the Libyan Sea. You can get here by car or by bus from Rethymnon and Chania, and then get on boats (taxi boats) that transport tourists to villages and beaches along the entire coast. The highway runs away from the sea, but you can walk from it along a mountain trail - the European E4 hiking trail runs along the entire west coast.

Beach description

The beach is sand and pebble with a gentle entrance to the sea. It is a tamarisk grove. Among the stones are beaten by freshwater springs, because of which the place got its name- "sweet water". It is not recommended to drink from the sources without boiling water. The sea is clean, free of garbage, cool because of all the same sources. Most of the season is quiet, without major waves.

Infrastructure is not well developed. There are no cabins for clothes changing. There are toilets, rental of accessories for rest. It allows to put a tent here. In a single tavern often leads a large turn, so supplies make sense to take with them. The hotel is located above, closer to the road. Because of the difficulty of access, the beach is not crowded with people, but it is popular with young people, and its eastern part is occupied by nudists.

When is the best time to go?

Greece - a country with a long length from north to south, so the recommendations will vary depending on the place where you are going. The holiday season  begins in May and reaches a peak in July-August: there are too many tourists, and the temperature on the southern islands reaches 40 degrees, which may still not play a role on the beach, but certainly not suitable for sightseeing. So the best time to relax in Greece is the end of spring-beginning of summer or September-October.
