Erimopolis beach

Itanos, named after the ancient city of Itanos in Erimopolis, which stood on this site. It is located on the northeastern tip of Crete, on the Sideros peninsula. It is approximately 25 kilometers drive along the mountain serpentine from the nearest major city of Sitia (where there is a port and airport). You can get there by bus or car.

Beach description

the coastline is divided into several excellent sandy beaches – the best of them is North, from it a large rock is separated South Beach. Even to the south is the third small beach, almost adjacent to the famous palm forest and the beach of Wai. The sea is quiet, clean, the entrance is without ledges, and the bottom is even and safe. All three beaches have no tourist infrastructure: no tavernas, hotels, beach accessories or swimming equipment. There are separate date palms that give a shadow, but also under them a place is not always free.

Hotels and restaurants are located in Palekastro, 7 kilometers south. On the way you can find a farm and a market of local fruits. The ruins of the ancient city are found on the shore in the archaeological zone, but they can be found in the sea. Among the ruins, colorful fish float. This is why the place is perfect for diving and snorkeling. Artifacts found during the Itinos excavations are in the Sitia Museum.

When is the best time to go?

Greece - a country with a long length from north to south, so the recommendations will vary depending on the place where you are going. The holiday season  begins in May and reaches a peak in July-August: there are too many tourists, and the temperature on the southern islands reaches 40 degrees, which may still not play a role on the beach, but certainly not suitable for sightseeing. So the best time to relax in Greece is the end of spring-beginning of summer or September-October.
