Alvor beach

Alvor is a magnificent white sandy beach in a former fishing village, which eventually turned into a popular tourist center with restaurants and hotels. Alvor is located between Portimao and Lagos. You can get it from Faro airport in 50 minutes by car.

Beach description

There is a 3-kilometer boardwalk next to the beach, leading you to the beach past the picturesque dunes and through the Ria de Alvor nature reserve. You can see several bars and restaurants along the way. At the end of the promenade there is a lighthouse, which offers a beautiful view of Alvor and Lagos.

The beach is stretching for several kilometers. The waters of Atlantic are striking clean and transparent, but are quite cold in this area. Near the beach passes a dangerous course, which obliges to look after young children carefully.

It is also advisable to avoid swimming in the rocky eastern part of the beach, where you can get injured by large stones in the water. Its western tip, at the mouth of the Alvor river, is ideal for kitesurfing, windsurfing, water skiing and kayaking. But you can collect shells at low tide anywhere in Alvor.

When is it better to go

The beach season in Portugal lasts from the beginning of June until September, when the air temperature reaches +30°C and the water temperature - +19°C. It should be remembered that the Atlantic Ocean does not warm up well and cools quickly, lovers of a more comfortable temperature can swim in natural stone pools, which are quite numerous on the coast.
