Batata beach

Batata Beach is located on the banks of the Old Town, near the harbor of Lagos, located at the mouth of the Bensafrim River. You can get to Batata Beach by renting a car or walking from the city centre. A long staircase leads to the shore.

Beach description

The beach line is about 160 m long and covered with clean golden sand. The entry into the water is gentle, the bottom is sandy and flat. The water is clean and calm. Batata Beach is regularly awarded the Blue Flag for its safety and high environmental standards. It's windless on the beach. There are paid sun loungers, umbrellas, showers and toilets. Wheelchair ramps is available. There are rentals with kayaks and catamarans, equipment for diving, snorkeling and scuba diving. You can rent a boat or powerboat for a boat trip along the coast, to the Cape of Ponta de Piedade with rocks, grottoes and caves. There are many restaurants, cafes, bars, nightclubs, entertainment establishments and shops not far from the beach. The city promenade with the statue of St. Gonzalo and comfortable recreation areas are located along the beach of Batata.

The beach is crowded, especially on weekends. A lot of tourists. Lovers of privacy should choose another beach, as Batata has a vibrant beach life from morning to late night. The main sights of the city – medieval buildings, museums, church of XVIII century – are located near the beach. A medieval fort is located at a walking distance.

When is it better to go

The beach season in Portugal lasts from the beginning of June until September, when the air temperature reaches +30°C and the water temperature - +19°C. It should be remembered that the Atlantic Ocean does not warm up well and cools quickly, lovers of a more comfortable temperature can swim in natural stone pools, which are quite numerous on the coast.
