Beach description
Martinhal is a 700-meter zone of white, fine and soft sand, stretching along the fishing harbor of Baleira. You can see several islands in the sea opposite to it. Their caves, grottoes, flora and fauna are worth exploring.
Baleira is a relatively sheltered bay from the winds, so the waves on Martinhal are usually calmer than on the neighboring beaches. The transition from shallow waters to the deep ones is quite smooth. The middle part of the beach is surrounded by dunes, and there are rocks with a scattering of boulders beneath them in the eastern part.
Guests in Martinhal are served two restaurants. The large parking lot behind the beach has a convenient gentle slope right on the sand. Lifeguards are on duty throughout the beach season. A walk from Sagres, where you can rent a hotel room, to Martinhal takes about 25 minutes.
When is it better to go
The beach season in Portugal lasts from the beginning of June until September, when the air temperature reaches +30°C and the water temperature - +19°C. It should be remembered that the Atlantic Ocean does not warm up well and cools quickly, lovers of a more comfortable temperature can swim in natural stone pools, which are quite numerous on the coast.
