Luz beach

Luz Beach is located on the west coast of the Algarve, in the village of the same name on the outskirts of Lagos, near the EN125 highway. You can get to Luz by shuttle bus or rented car from Faro Airport and other cities in the Algarve. The village has excellent hotels and guest houses for family holidays.

Beach description

The coastline of the Luz is about a kilometre long and is divided into two parts. One is covered with very fine light sand, the other – with picturesque volcanic rocks. The sandy area is characterized by a long and gentle entry to the water and a pleasant for bare feet hard sandy bottom. It is often windy, which is enjoyed by windsurfers and other lovers of extreme. In windless weather, the ocean is quite calm. You can swim and sunbathe, ride catamarans, water skis, jet skis, go parasailing, kitesurfing and standup paddleboarding. For diving and snorkeling, it is advisable to pack up diving suits as it is impossible to stay in the water for a long time. It is very stressful to stay at Luz Beach with children, as it is quite difficult to keep a child from swimming, and the water is almost always cold. The ocean only warms up to +22°C in mid-summer and cools down rather quickly by autumn.

The beach is crowded. There are deck chairs and umbrellas, showers, toilets and water equipment rentals. The beach is regularly awarded the Blue Flag for its safety, cleanliness and perfect conditions for a holiday. Picturesque volcanic rocks rise above the shore, resembling a slice of puff cake. Next to the beach there is a tiled promenade with a lot of cafes, restaurants, bars and nightclubs. The eastern end of the beach is enclosed by a huge rock formed in ancient times by a volcanic eruption. Not far from Luz, there is also a site of archaeological excavations of Roman period structures.

When is it better to go

The beach season in Portugal lasts from the beginning of June until September, when the air temperature reaches +30°C and the water temperature - +19°C. It should be remembered that the Atlantic Ocean does not warm up well and cools quickly, lovers of a more comfortable temperature can swim in natural stone pools, which are quite numerous on the coast.
