Barril beach

Barril Beach is one of the popular places to visit in southern Portugal. It is located in the Algarve area, 5 kilometers away from the port of Tavira. He gained wide fame thanks to the unique anchor “cemetery” with more than 100 rusty anchors, half deepened in white sand.

Beach description

The water in the Barril lagoon is crystal clear, dark blue and higher in temperature than in the western part of the Algarve. Its soft sand cover spanning several kilometers, the absence of winds and a relaxed atmosphere, make for relaxing with children and romantic walks. 2 kilometers east of the beach is a nudist relaxation area.

Buildings of the former fishing village were used to create beach facilities, such as: restaurants, bars, shops. Their decor keeps the charming features of the past, so many institutions resemble museums. The beach is under the control of lifeguards in the summer. Here you can rent a sun lounger, go sailing, kayaking, water skiing and surfing. Beach amenities include toilets, showers, changing rooms, parking.

You can reach the Barril beach from Pedras d’el Rei by train in 8 minutes or on foot in about a quarter of an hour. In any case, the path will pass through the Ria Formosa - picturesque nature park.

When is it better to go

The beach season in Portugal lasts from the beginning of June until September, when the air temperature reaches +30°C and the water temperature - +19°C. It should be remembered that the Atlantic Ocean does not warm up well and cools quickly, lovers of a more comfortable temperature can swim in natural stone pools, which are quite numerous on the coast.
