Kaštelet beach

Located on the southern tip of the Marjan peninsula, just two kilometers from the vibrant city of Split, lies the serene Kaštelet Beach. Affectionately known by locals as "Obojena," a nod to the eponymous beach café that adds charm to the area, this picturesque beach is a hidden gem waiting to be discovered. A concrete platform extends gracefully into the sea, dividing the beach into two distinct areas. This clever design ensures a sense of tranquility and order, even during the bustling high season. Towering imperial palm trees line the shore, providing a touch of exotic shade and enhancing the beach's allure.

Beach description

In 2019, Kaštelet Beach was acclaimed as the best in the vicinity of Split, earning high praise from European experts. You can reach this idyllic spot by car, scheduled bus, or bicycle, with the journey taking a mere 5-7 minutes. Parking is available right by the beach; however, for more convenient spots, it's advisable to arrive early. Yet, the most delightful approach is a stroll down the scenic path that begins at the port and meanders along the coast.

The beachfront is a narrow ribbon of fine pebbles, giving way to clusters of large stones and boulders. The sea boasts a crystal-clear, mostly calm surface, with an exquisite turquoise hue. The water's edge is gentle, and the depth increases gradually. Beware of sea urchins nestled among the rocks - protect your feet by investing in special rubber shoes.

Access to the beach is complimentary, with amenities such as restrooms, shower cabins, and changing rooms available for your convenience. While there are no umbrellas or lounge chairs for hire, the shade of sparse trees offers a cool retreat for those who arrive early to claim their spot.

As for entertainment, the beach offers water games, inflatable castle slides, and trampolines for children, along with the option to rent a boat or kayak. Safe swimming areas are demarcated by buoys, and a water polo court is set up in the beach's eastern sector.

When hunger strikes, retreat to the quaint beach bar perched on a concrete platform. The menu features local specialties, traditional desserts, and a selection of coffee, soft, and alcoholic beverages. As the day wanes, the area in front of the bar transforms into a vibrant dance floor, illuminated by dazzling lights. On weekends and holidays, the revelry continues until dawn, with the last partygoers departing with the first rays of sunlight.

Towards the eastern end of the beach, you'll find Cafe Obojena Svjetlost, once a neighborhood favorite that has seen a decline in popularity following a change in ownership.

Kaštelet is among the select Croatian beaches that welcome pets. Admittedly, this is not to everyone's liking, so a designated area near the rocks has been set aside for dog owners.

When is the best time to go?

  • The best time to visit Croatia for a beach vacation is during the summer months, specifically from June to August. This period offers the most favorable weather conditions for enjoying the country's stunning coastline.

    • June: The beginning of the summer brings pleasant temperatures and fewer crowds, making it an ideal time for those looking to enjoy a more peaceful beach experience.
    • July and August: These are the peak months for tourism in Croatia. Visitors can expect hot, sunny days perfect for swimming and sunbathing. However, popular spots can be quite crowded, so booking accommodations in advance is recommended.
    • September: As the summer winds down, the water remains warm, and the crowds diminish. September offers a great balance of good weather and a more relaxed atmosphere, suitable for those who prefer to avoid the peak season rush.

Regardless of the month, Croatia's Adriatic coast boasts crystal-clear waters, pebbled beaches, and a variety of islands to explore. For the optimal beach vacation experience, aim for the summer months when the country's natural beauty can be enjoyed to the fullest.
