Sveti Jakov beach

It is located in the southern part of Croatia in the vicinity of Dubrovnik, the cultural and historical pearl of the country and its main tourist center. Thousands of tourists visit Dubrovnik every year, so the city's beaches are always crowded. The pleasant exception is Sveti Jakov Beach, which is located one and a half kilometers from the city limits and visitors are almost unknown. It can be reached on foot, by bike or regular bus.

Beach description

The beach is lurking in a small cozy bay surrounded by picturesque cliffs on all sides. It offers fantastic view of the Old Town, as well as the opposite island of Lokrum.

On the hill, next to the bus stop, there is the Church of St. Jacob, after which the beach is named. There is a parking lot where you can leave your car. Downstairs from the church there is a pretty steep staircase (160 steps), and you will have to go back down it. Therefore, people with disabilities should choose another beach or get to the sea, renting a boat or a motorboat in the port of the Old Town.

Well, tourists who are not afraid of physical activity, can count on a quite rest on a beautiful beach with fine pebbles and a sea of amazing turquoise color.

The water near the coast is relatively deep, so the water is slightly cooler than on other beaches. When entering the sea, there are large stones, under which treacherous sea urchins hide. Therefore, this is not the best beach for vacation with kids, and adults should take care of special shoes.

But for fans of diving and snorkeling here is a real paradise, and lovers of diving from the rocks will be able to "come off" to fame. On the beach there is also an opportunity to have fun on water attractions and rent a boat, catamaran or kayak.

You can have a snack and freshen up with cool drinks on the beach, and umbrellas and sun loungers are available for rent at extra fee. Many tourists get sit on their towels or sunbathe on large flat stones near the shore. However, it should be noted that in the afternoon the beach quickly covered with shade, so sunbathing lovers should come early.

When is the best time to go?

Although the summer in Croatia is hot (the temperature can rise up to 30 degrees), but thanks to the sea breezes it is very pleasant - the best time for a beach holiday. If you want to see the sights of this country rich in historical events, it is better to choose tours in spring or autumn: firstly, the weather is comfortable, and secondly, there are not so many tourists in these times of the year, which positively affects prices.

Useful information

Almost all tourists who prefer to rest on the beach of St. Jacob have a desire to visit the island of Lokrum, located opposite. It can be reached by ferry, which leaves the Old Town every half hour. This is an ideal place to spend time surrounded by pristine nature, admire rabbits and peacocks, and laze on wild scenic beaches (some of which are nudist). The remains of ancient chapel and monastery have been preserved on the island, and there is a beautiful botanic garden. The main thing is to take care of comfortable closed shoes, headgear and bring carrots for rabbits.

Another delightful place in the immediate vicinity of the beach, mandatory to visit - Orsula Park. This is a real open-air theater, located at an altitude of 200 meters above sea level among the surviving ruin of the ancient church of St. Ursula. Music and theater festivals, concerts and other cultural events are often held here. Most importantly, it offers the best views of Dubrovnik, the Old Town and Lokrum Island. Best of all, it is to visit the park at sunset to first enjoy the fantastic scenery of the setting sun and then admire the views of the night city and the magical outlines of the ancient walls, which are bizzarely illuminated by colored lanterns.
