Chirihama beach

Chirihama Beach stands out as a unique destination on the western side of the Noto Peninsula. It is the only beach in Japan where you can drive on the sand along the picturesque Sea of Japan. Vehicles are allowed to travel freely in both directions on this coastal haven, and there is no charge for the exhilarating experience of driving on Chirihama's sands. A scenic drive from the central city of Kanazawa will get you to the beach in about an hour.

Beach description

Chirihama Beach, enveloped in dense yellow sand, stretches approximately 8 km in length and was once 50 meters wide. However, due to gradual erosion, its width has diminished to 35 meters. The beach's shallow waters and gentle slope make it an ideal spot for sea swimming, attracting families with young children in search of a comfortable summer retreat. Both locals and tourists acclaim Chirihama for its breathtaking sunsets and the magnificent vistas it offers of the Sea of Japan.

The allure of Chirihama extends to its culinary offerings, with beachfront huts serving fresh fish and shellfish that are a hit among vacationers. In the southern part of Chirihama, several grocery stores specialize in local treats, including fried clams and turbot. These stalls, however, close for the winter season, from early December until mid-March.

From April through October, Chirihama becomes a canvas for a local sculptor who crafts incredible sand figures. Since 1994, this artist has been showcasing his sand masterpieces on the beach. Additionally, the first weekend of August marks the annual Sand Sculpture Festival, an event where everyone is invited to participate and compete in sand sculpting.

Best Time to Visit

The best time to visit Japan for a beach vacation is typically during the summer months, from late June to August. This period offers the warmest weather and the most sunshine, making it ideal for enjoying the country's beautiful beaches. However, there are a few things to consider when planning your trip:

  • Late June to July: This is the start of the beach season in Japan. The temperatures are warm, but it's also the start of the rainy season in many parts of the country. If you don't mind occasional showers, this can be a good time to go.
  • August: August is the peak of summer and is the hottest month. Beaches are very popular among both locals and tourists, so expect larger crowds. It's the best time for sun-seekers and those looking to participate in summer festivals.
  • Early September: The weather remains warm, but the crowds start to thin out as the school season begins. This can be a great time for those looking for a more relaxed beach experience.

Keep in mind that while the summer months are the best for a beach vacation, they are also the busiest. Booking accommodations in advance is highly recommended. Additionally, always check the local weather and sea conditions before planning your daily activities.
