Beach description

The largest golden sand dunes and endless beach in Tottori is the biggest tourist attraction in this country. The coastline stretches about 16 kilometers along the Sea of Japan. Sand dunes from the coast reach two kilometers in width and 50 meters in height. Tottori Sand Dunes are owned by the Sanin Kaigan National Park. It is also unique that the constant movement of the tides and coastal winds create new sand dunes and provide an ever-changing landscape. Dunes have existed for more than 100,000 years, they are visited by about two million people annually, mainly tourists from Japan and East Asia.

In a few minute walking distance from the beach there is a museum that has collected large sand sculptures by artists from around the world. Exhibitions change annually and last from April to early January.

When is the best time to go?

If in the north of Japan, in Hokkaido, the weather in January-February is quite wintery, in the southern islands the temperature rarely drops below 20 degrees even in the cold season. In summer, the rainy season comes in Japan, when the humidity becomes almost one hundred percent, and the thermometer is at 30 to 40 degrees.   Therefore, the best time to travel to Japan – is late spring or early autumn.
